New National Standards for Electric Vehicle Batteries to Be Implemented in China by 2026

New

On April 19, 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China plans to implement a new national standard for electric vehicle power batteries, effective July 1, 2026. This standard, titled Safety Requirements for Power Batteries Used in Electric Vehicles, is a mandatory national standard developed by the ministry.

The new standard includes testing protocols for seven individual battery cells and seventeen battery packs or systems. According to officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the revised standard introduces important new tests, such as bottom impact testing and safety tests after fast charging cycles. Additionally, safety requirements regarding thermal diffusion have been strengthened.

One significant update in the new standard is the enhancement of the pre-warning mechanism for power batteries, which has been upgraded to ensure that the batteries do not catch fire or explode under specific conditions. This proactive measure aims to reduce the likelihood of spontaneous combustion of power batteries right from the product design stage, thereby further protecting consumers’ lives and property.
