300 Fast Charge Cycles, No Fires or Explosions: New National Standards for Electric Vehicle Batteries Announced

In recent years, the explosion of new energy vehicles has led to stricter standards for automotive-grade batteries, ensuring the safety of the public and their property. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) officially released GB38031-2025, titled “Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles.” This new standard includes revised testing protocols for safety after fast charge cycles, as well as new provisions for thermal diffusion and bottom impact tests.

New National Standards for Electric Vehicle Batteries

According to the regulations set by the People’s Republic of China’s MIIT, the mandatory national standard GB38031-2025 will come into effect on July 1, 2026. This applies to new models seeking type approval from that date, while models that have already received type approval must comply by July 1, 2027.

Key points from the revised version include significant enhancements to technical requirements. The thermal diffusion test has been modified from “providing heat event alarm signals five minutes before fire or explosion” to “no fires or explosions (alarms still required), and smoke must not harm passengers.” Additionally, the standard introduces bottom impact testing, which assesses the protective capability of the battery when subjected to impacts from below, requiring “no leaks, shell rupture, fires, or explosions, and compliance with insulation resistance requirements.”

In the newly added safety test after fast charge cycles, the standard requires that “after 300 fast charge cycles, external short-circuit testing must not result in fire or explosion.”

The MIIT has raised the technical requirements in the mandatory national standard for “Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles.” This move aims to guide and promote the enhancement and application of safety technologies, while safeguarding consumer lives and property and raising the safety baseline. Furthermore, the MIIT is improving the standard system to strengthen healthy competition among enterprises, eliminating non-compliant, illegal, and unreasonable practices.
