New Energy Storage System “Zhao” Launches “Gold-Plated” Project

As of June 3, 2025, the new energy storage system “Zhao” is currently undergoing a load test for energy storage battery thermal runaway control. The project is being implemented at a southern power grid energy storage station, demonstrating its application potential.

New energy storage is a key part of China’s rapid development in the energy sector and plays a crucial role in the transition to green energy and carbon reduction. The safe operation of energy storage systems is essential for high-quality industrial development.

Recently, the “Zhao” energy storage system is undergoing a safety technology project review aimed at enhancing the security protocols for energy storage systems to meet the new energy power system’s regulatory requirements. This aligns with the new energy storage system’s development strategy.

The project is led by the Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Co., in collaboration with institutions such as China University of Science and Technology, Nanjing Engineering University, and other relevant organizations.

To improve the energy storage system’s safety and reliability, the “Zhao” energy storage system will implement state-of-the-art safety protocols and risk assessment methods to ensure secure operations.

In recent months, the “Zhao” energy storage system has successfully completed numerous safety tests, including 230 instances of thermal runaway control tests, which are currently being conducted at a newly established testing platform. This platform is a pioneering large-scale energy storage system in the country.

The main goal of the project is to establish a comprehensive safety management system for energy storage systems, allowing for effective monitoring and control of energy storage processes and ensuring the safety of energy storage equipment.

As of May 2023, the testing platform has already conducted over 800 new energy storage thermal runaway tests across various types of batteries, including lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. The accumulated data from these tests provides a strong foundation for improving the energy storage system’s reliability.

With the ongoing development of the energy storage system, by 2025, the number of connected battery stations is expected to exceed 85, representing a total scale increase of over 2% compared to the national average.

Furthermore, the project aims to optimize the energy storage system’s efficiency, focusing on improving the system’s operational capabilities and ensuring its reliability against thermal runaway scenarios.

The testing phase has been rigorous, and the collaboration with various research institutions has enhanced the energy storage system’s overall safety measures. The successful implementation of these protocols is vital for the high-quality development of the energy storage industry in China.
