On January 20, 2026, at 09:30, it was announced that the Maritsa East 3 power plant will officially commence operations of its 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This project, a collaboration between ContourGlobal and Bulgarian Energy Holding, represents one of the largest battery energy storage projects in Eastern Europe.
Since its establishment in 2008, Bulgarian Energy Holding has developed a comprehensive portfolio of energy products that includes power generation, manufacturing, trading, and services, focusing on a unified energy supply chain. This includes products such as utility-scale energy storage, grid energy storage, industrial energy storage, residential energy storage, electric vehicle batteries, and marine battery applications.
As the energy sector continues to evolve, the demand for energy storage solutions is increasing significantly. This project is poised to play a crucial role in stabilizing the energy grid in Bulgaria and enhancing the reliability of energy supply in the region.
In addition to energy storage, the project will also contribute to the overall efficiency of the Bulgarian energy market and support the integration of renewable energy sources.
