New Energy Initiative: Zelestra Secures 1.6 GWh Solar Power Storage Project

New

International Development Bureau announces exciting news! Sunlight Energy has secured a 1.6GWh energy storage project. This announcement is a significant milestone for the energy sector.

On May 28, 2025, at 09:47, the New Wave Finance APP reported that Sunlight Energy is set to deliver a 1GWh energy storage system in the near future. This project will be developed in partnership with the renewable energy company Zelestra. Sunlight Energy aims to become the largest provider of energy storage projects in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on advancing energy storage technology.

The project will utilize the PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled battery storage system along with a Power Conversion System (PCS), with an expected storage capacity of around 1GWh. This initiative is part of the Aurora project which is also under development, expected to produce approximately 600GWh of renewable energy annually — enough to power about 20 million households.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) is scheduled to start delivering by the fourth quarter of 2025. Leo Moreno, the managing director of Zelestra, stated, “This crucial project will provide the most advanced battery energy storage system in the market, facilitating the largest energy storage initiative in history.”

In addition, Sunlight Energy is also involved in the Del Desierto energy storage project, which features a capacity of 200MW/800MWh. This project, developed by Atlas Renewable Energy, has been in progress since April and will deliver substantial renewable energy benefits.

Further developments include a 1.57 billion USD project that is influenced by environmental assessments, planning to build a 120MW/922.76MWh energy storage facility by August 2026.

In a collaboration with Globeleq, Sunlight Energy has secured a 153MW/612MWh battery energy storage project, which will be operational for a period of 15 years.

The Red Sands energy storage project, located in the northern region, is set to become the largest battery storage system in that area, utilizing approximately 5 hectares of land and connecting to the power grid via the Eskom Garona substation.

According to the contract, Sunlight Energy will provide the cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 system, ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency for the Red Sands project, which is projected to reach financial closure by 2025 and commence operations in 2027.

In summary, Sunlight Energy is making significant strides in the renewable energy sector, positioning itself as a key player in energy storage solutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
