NCKU Launches Low-Carbon Digital Construction Alliance for Sustainable Net-Zero Goals

NCKU

On October 16, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) announced the establishment of the Low-Carbon Digital Construction Alliance (LCDCA). This nonprofit collaborative platform aims to promote the use of low-carbon building materials, green construction methods, and digital construction technologies, assisting enterprises in achieving sustainable development and net-zero goals.

The LCDCA is supported by a project funded by the National Science and Technology Council and is driven by professors Yang Shih-Hsien from the Department of Civil Engineering and Yang Shih-Hung from the Department of Architecture at NCKU. As global trends lean towards net-zero emissions, the key to reducing carbon emissions in civil engineering and construction lies in establishing credible benchmarks for carbon footprints in engineering.

The LCDCA serves as a platform for technological integration, cross-domain collaboration, and value chain restructuring. It will integrate academic research, industry, and policy initiatives to create standards and certifications for low-carbon materials and methods. This effort aims to enhance collaboration throughout the industry chain and strengthen Taiwan’s international competitiveness in sustainable construction.

One of the core initiatives of the alliance involves the introduction and certification of Green-BIM Objects to build a “low-carbon digital twin” database. This database will provide precise carbon reduction decision-making support throughout the planning, design, construction, and operational maintenance phases. The alliance’s services include Green-BIM component certification, organizational carbon auditing (ISO 14064-1), product carbon footprint guidance (ISO 14067), energy management implementation (ISO 50001), carbon assessment and optimization in engineering design, and carbon auditing during the construction phase.

Furthermore, the alliance will assist with government grant applications, technology transfer, and industry-academic collaboration matchmaking, all aimed at enhancing corporate sustainable governance and market competitiveness.
