With its commitment to green hydrogen, batteries, and electric vehicles, Morocco is laying the groundwork to become a global leader in sustainable mobility. The recent Green Impact Expo & Summit 2025, held from February 11 to 13 in Casablanca, gathered a range of public and private stakeholders seeking innovative solutions for sustainable transport.
During this event, Ryad Mezzour, the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, emphasized the strategic importance of integrating the electric battery value chain to safeguard the nation’s automotive industry. He highlighted the economic opportunities stemming from advancements in industrial technologies. Chakib Alj, president of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), also noted the country’s progress in renewable energy, clean transport, and strategic infrastructure.
French Ambassador to Morocco, Christophe Lecourtier, acknowledged Morocco’s emerging role in sustainable mobility, particularly due to significant developments in the automotive, rail, and urban transport sectors. He reiterated France’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s efforts through expertise in major transport projects, especially with the upcoming 2030 World Cup in mind.
Minister Mezzour outlined how Morocco views sustainable mobility as a genuine economic opportunity, leveraging its existing skills and resources. He pointed out that the country benefits from a competitive automotive industry that must adapt to international market demands and the European transition to electric mobility by 2035. He stressed the necessity of integrating an electric battery value chain to preserve approximately 250,000 to 260,000 jobs in the sector and maintain its position as the leading national exporter with a turnover of 150 billion dirhams.
Mezzour also highlighted Morocco’s advancements in battery production, indicating that the country aims to produce all components of electric batteries and assemble electric vehicles. This ambitious goal is set to begin next year, with plans for a significant industrial transformation by 2032 to triple exports and potentially double jobs and added value.
Morocco has the potential to become the only country in the Euro-African region capable of manufacturing electric vehicles entirely, utilizing its natural resources such as phosphates and cobalt to support the automotive sector. Mezzour urged business leaders to engage in this transformation process to enhance Morocco’s status in the global sustainable mobility market and attract international investors.
Chakib Alj emphasized the importance of raising awareness among economic actors about the challenges and opportunities within the sustainable mobility sector. He noted that Morocco is among the top ten countries worldwide in climate performance indexes, thanks to its ambitious strategy to reduce its carbon footprint by 2050. The country has made massive investments in wind and solar energy, achieving a 44% share of renewable energy in its national energy mix, with a goal of reaching 52% by 2030. This commitment helped Morocco reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 4.5 million tonnes in 2022.
Alj reiterated the need for a transition to clean mobility, pointing out that the transport sector accounts for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in Morocco. He praised the success of tram systems in Casablanca and Rabat-Salé and shared ongoing initiatives aimed at replacing 30% of public administration vehicles with electric models by 2033, as well as increasing the number of electric buses in operation. He also highlighted the importance of tax incentives and the deployment of charging stations to encourage electric vehicle purchases and addressed traffic congestion through digitalization and AI-enhanced traffic management solutions.
In rail transport, Alj commended the success of the Al Boraq high-speed line and the planned expansions to Marrakech and Agadir. These developments will be crucial for the 2030 World Cup, which is expected to generate significant travel demands. Alj concluded by noting Morocco’s position among the top six countries promoting green hydrogen. The growth of the hydrogen and battery industries could transform Morocco’s economy, boosting exports and enhancing the dirham’s convertibility, ultimately positioning Morocco as a world leader in sustainable mobility.
