Elements Green has entered into a partnership with G2 Energy, a subsidiary of Mitie, to design and construct its 360MW/720MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nottinghamshire. The agreement, valued at £71.5 million, includes the development of the necessary 400kV grid connection infrastructure. This project is strategically located near the Staythorpe National Grid substation, just northwest of Newark-on-Trent.
Planning permission for the project was secured by Elements Green in June of the previous year, with an operational target set for 2026. Construction work is set to begin this month, and the project is expected to generate approximately 60 jobs.
G2 Energy transitioned into full BESS-focused engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services under Mitie following its acquisition in 2023. The decision to integrate G2 was driven by Mitie’s commitment to decarbonizing buildings, a growing focus within its extensive facilities management division, which serves numerous large commercial and industrial clients with specific sustainability goals for the next 3 to 5 years.
According to Elements Green’s CEO, Rasmus Friis, this partnership represents a significant advancement in realizing one of Europe’s largest battery storage projects. Kelvin Ruck, Managing Director of Mitie Power & Grid, noted that the two companies have been working together over the past few months to refine the project’s design and delivery timeline. Ruck, along with G2’s COO Nigel Hughes and 50 other employees, transitioned to Mitie during the acquisition process.
Additionally, Elements Green is in the process of acquiring a development consent order (DCO) for the 800MW Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park, which will also include battery storage, in Nottinghamshire. The second phase of statutory consultation for this development recently concluded.
