Meta Platforms Inc. has entered into four agreements with the renewable energy developer Invenergy to procure wind and solar power, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sourcing clean electricity for its operations and data centers. According to a statement from the companies, these contracts encompass projects across three U.S. states, boasting a combined capacity of 791 megawatts. While the electricity generated will feed into local power grids, Meta will receive the clean energy credits associated with this new generation.
These agreements emerge amidst ongoing discussions among Congressional Republicans regarding the timeline for phasing out tax credits for renewable energy projects as part of a broader tax-and-spending bill proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The uncertainty surrounding the future of clean energy incentives has caused concern among developers, prompting some to accelerate project timelines to qualify for existing tax breaks.
Major technology companies, including Meta, have been among the largest purchasers of emissions-free power to achieve their climate objectives and meet the increasing electricity demands of their data centers, particularly those supporting artificial intelligence operations. Earlier this month, Meta also finalized a deal to acquire power from an Illinois nuclear power plant. Since 2019, Meta’s total electricity consumption has nearly tripled, necessitating additional power contracts.
With these latest agreements, Meta’s total contracts for clean energy from Invenergy have reached 1,800 megawatts, with new projects located in Ohio, Arkansas, and Texas.
