Mercedes-Benz Begins Road Tests for Solid-State Batteries
February 24, 2025 – Mercedes-Benz engineers, alongside experts from Factorial, have initiated a groundbreaking solid-state battery testing program, marking the debut of a vehicle powered by a lithium-metal solid-state battery. The Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP), a subsidiary of the Mercedes-Benz Group renowned for its Formula 1 technologies, and the Mercedes Benz Center of Competence for Battery Systems have designed and developed an innovative new battery system.
HPP’s expertise allows for the rapid application of F1 technologies into high-performance automotive projects. Following extensive testing on various test benches, the prototype solid-state battery was integrated into an EQS model by the end of 2024. This all-electric vehicle underwent slight modifications to accommodate the solid-state battery, alongside the necessary accessories for its operation. Preliminary laboratory tests were conducted in Stuttgart at the end of 2024, setting the stage for road tests that commenced in February 2025.
Markus Schäfer, a Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer for Development & Procurement, stated, “The development of an automotive-scale solid-state battery underscores our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We are excited to announce the start of road testing with a prototype vehicle equipped with this advanced technology, which will provide vital insights into the potential integration of this cutting-edge battery technology into series production.”
The solid-state battery is designed to be safer, lighter, and more efficient, offering a remarkable 25% increase in range compared to traditional batteries. This advancement is a significant step forward in the automotive industry’s shift toward more sustainable and efficient energy solutions.
