**PRESS RELEASE: Lyten Acquires Europe’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Systems Manufacturing Operation from Northvolt**

Lyten has announced its acquisition of Northvolt Dwa ESS, the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturing facility in Europe, located in Gdansk, Poland. The company aims to promptly resume operations in Gdansk, enabling the sale of BESS and plans to introduce the world’s first BESS powered by lithium-sulfur batteries. This move complements Lyten’s earlier acquisition of Northvolt’s lithium-metal cell manufacturing facility in Silicon Valley, which will help scale its lithium-sulfur battery production.

**San Jose, CA & Luxembourg – July 1, 2025** – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Lyten, a leader in supermaterial applications and lithium-sulfur batteries, has successfully acquired Northvolt’s Dwa ESS operations in Gdansk, Poland. This facility spans 25,000 square meters (270,000 sq ft) and serves as a hub for BESS manufacturing and research and development. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed by either party.

The acquisition of Northvolt enhances Lyten’s ability to expand its lithium-sulfur battery production in Europe and provides the necessary manufacturing capacity to meet the increasing demand in the BESS market. Lyten has previously announced that its lithium-sulfur batteries are now being commercially shipped for use in drones, are set to launch aboard the International Space Station, and have been selected by Chrysler, a Stellantis company, for its Halcyon Concept Electric Vehicle.

Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries boast unique features that make them well-suited for the rapidly growing BESS sector, including a wider operating temperature range (ideal for high temperatures), enhanced safety, and the potential for production using low-cost materials found abundantly in the US and Europe. Additionally, lithium-sulfur batteries are known for their high energy density and lightweight design.

Dan Cook, CEO and Co-Founder of Lyten, stated, “Northvolt’s BESS manufacturing operations are truly world-class and seamlessly align with Lyten’s strategy as we embark on an exciting new chapter. We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland to fulfill existing and new customer orders.” He expressed gratitude towards the Port of Gdansk and local and federal officials for their support in merging Silicon Valley technology with Polish engineering expertise to deliver next-generation energy storage solutions globally.

The Dwa ESS facility commenced operations in 2023 and is equipped to scale up to 6 GWh of energy storage manufacturing capacity, with room for future expansion beyond 10 GWh. The facility is powered by renewable energy and has secured contracts extending into 2026.

Lars Herlitz, Lyten Chairman and Co-Founder, emphasized, “European customers have made it clear that they prefer energy storage systems manufactured locally, utilizing supply chains free from geopolitical risks. Gdansk, Poland, is an ideal location to meet this demand for Europe.”

BESS represents the fastest-growing segment of the battery market, crucial for meeting the power demands of AI data centers, enhancing electricity grid resilience in Europe and North America, and addressing the increasing energy needs in emerging markets. In December, Lyten announced a $650 million Letter of Intent (LOI) from the Export-Import Bank of the US (EXIM) to expand battery manufacturing and initiate BESS deliveries to Emerging Market nations.

Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski, CEO of Northvolt Poland, remarked, “Northvolt aimed to lead the sustainable development of Europe’s battery industry. Lyten is advancing this mission by manufacturing BESS and introducing lithium-sulfur batteries in Europe, which rely on locally abundant materials instead of minerals like nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. It’s exciting that the facility in Gdansk, designed for energy storage production, will continue its operations.”

Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, President of Gdansk, noted, “This planned investment underscores the growing competitiveness of Poland, particularly Gdansk, on the global economic stage. Lyten’s initiatives present an opportunity for collaboration in energy storage, the establishment of energy innovation centers, and the advancement of R&D partnerships with local universities.”

In late 2024, Northvolt revealed plans to sell its Northvolt Systems business unit as part of its strategic review and bankruptcy processes. In April 2025, Scania, a Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer, announced its acquisition of the Industrial subset of the Northvolt Systems division. The transaction between Lyten and Northvolt is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025.
