Longshan Temple Implements Solar Panels to Promote Environmental Sustainability

The historic site of Lungshan Temple in Wanhua has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by installing vertical solar panels on its premises. This initiative was officially launched on April 28, under the witness of Taipei City Mayor Chang Wan-an, and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 3,000 kilograms annually.

In alignment with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the installation of these solar panels is part of the “Taipei Net Zero 101” project, which aims to implement 101 net-zero demonstration projects across 14 locations within three years. The Lungshan Temple project is one of the first to go live.

Mayor Chang highlighted that Lungshan Temple, which boasts nearly 300 years of history, is one of the most iconic temples in the country. By adopting solar panels, it sets a precedent for how cultural heritage can integrate sustainable practices. The temple is expected to generate approximately 5,900 kWh of electricity each year, which will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Additionally, Chang mentioned that the renovation project for the park in front of Lungshan Temple has recently been awarded, with construction set to begin in June this year and expected to be completed by July next year. This project aims to create a people-centered, bright, and inviting waterfront plaza that will connect with the metro station and bus stops, potentially increasing foot traffic and economic opportunities for the local area.

According to Huang Shuwei, the chairman of Lungshan Temple, the temple has been committed to environmental sustainability since 2000, when it began to reduce the burning of joss paper. This recent installation exemplifies the fusion of traditional practices and modern technology, and the temple plans to continue its sustainable efforts to benefit society and the environment.

Tseng Kuan-chih, the coordinator of the Taipei Net Zero 101 project, expressed gratitude to Lungshan Temple and the city government for their support, stating that from now on, Lungshan Temple will serve as a key example of environmental responsibility in Taipei. The temple plans to use green energy to illuminate its sacred space.
