LONGi Announces Two New Global Solar Cell Efficiency Records

On June 12, 2025, LONGi made a significant announcement during the Technology Innovation Session at the SNEC 18th (2025) International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition in Shanghai. The company revealed two groundbreaking technological advancements that set new global efficiency records.

Certified by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), LONGi’s self-developed large-area (260.9 cm²) crystalline silicon-perovskite two-terminal tandem solar cell achieved an impressive conversion efficiency of 33 percent. This accomplishment established a new record for large-area tandem cells. In addition, the efficiency of LONGi’s back-contact (BC) module surpassed 26 percent, further elevating the efficiency standards for crystalline silicon modules. Both achievements are featured in the 66th edition of the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables, underscoring China’s ongoing leadership in global photovoltaic (PV) technology.

### Tech Breakthroughs: Redefining Industry Standards

At SNEC 2025, LONGi’s crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell reached a remarkable 33 percent efficiency over an extensive area of 260.9 cm², made possible through material innovation and structural optimization. This represents a nearly 20 percent efficiency improvement over traditional single-junction silicon solar cells and marks the world’s first achievement of 33 percent efficiency at mass-producible dimensions, paving the way for reduced PV energy costs. Furthermore, the 26 percent efficiency of its BC module highlights LONGi’s deep expertise in this technology, propelling crystalline silicon module efficiency closer to the 27 percent threshold.

As a leader in the PV industry, LONGi has continuously driven technological innovation. From revolutionizing the market with monocrystalline technology to spearheading research in perovskite and BC solar cells, the company has developed a comprehensive R&D ecosystem encompassing materials, equipment, and manufacturing processes.

“LONGi’s innovation stems from a deep respect for technological fundamentals,” said Li Zhenguo, founder of LONGi and newly appointed CTO. “We focus not only on our own breakthroughs but also on promoting collaborative innovation,” he added.

These remarkable achievements have been officially included in the 66th edition of the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables, curated by Professor Martin Green—recognized as the “Father of Photovoltaics”—alongside a global panel of leading scientists. This benchmark has been published in Progress in Photovoltaics since 1993 and is widely regarded as the “gold standard” for tracking advancements in PV technology.

### Innovation Strategy: From Cell Technology to Collaborative Ecosystems

As it celebrates its 25th anniversary, LONGi introduced a dual-engine “Innovation + Collaboration” strategy. This approach aims to intensify R&D efforts in cutting-edge fields such as BC, perovskite, and hydrogen energy while fostering an open innovation ecosystem with global partners. “The era of photovoltaics as a dominant energy source has arrived, yet challenges such as energy storage and grid integration remain. Only through collaborative innovation can clean energy truly benefit everyone,” Li stated.

“Whether pushing the limits of single-junction silicon solar cells or advancing next-gen tandem technologies, LONGi embraces multiple technological pathways with an open mindset. Today’s dual breakthroughs epitomize our relentless commitment to R&D and efficiency frontiers. We will continue driving PV to become the world’s primary energy source,” he emphasized.

A highlight of the exhibition was LONGi’s collaboration with Belgium’s Innoputs Solar Team on the solar race car “Infinite Apollo.” Equipped with LONGi’s latest BC solar cells and flexible encapsulation technology, the vehicle is set to compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC). This partnership exemplifies innovative applications of “PV + Transportation,” showcasing the technology’s limitless potential.

At SNEC 2025, LONGi proclaimed to the global community that Chinese PV enterprises are transforming the industry landscape through technological advancements, bringing the zero-carbon future closer. “Over the past 25 years, PV technology has made clean energy the world’s most economical power source,” Li remarked. “For the next 25 years, our mission is to integrate green energy into every aspect of life. These records represent not just milestones for LONGi but also accelerants for the global energy transition.”
