Microsoft Develops Millennia-Long Data Storage Technology
Microsoft Research recently published new findings in Nature, unveiling “Project Silica,” a glass-based 3D optical storage technology. This technology can store 4.8TB of data on a square glass plate measuring 12 cm wide and 2 mm thick, equivalent to approximately 2 million printed books. It utilizes femtosecond lasers to engrave nanoscale three-dimensional voxel structures within the glass and employs optical refraction and polarization changes for data encoding, combined with machine learning algorithms and intelligent error correction systems for stable reading. The data density reaches 1.59 Gbit/mm³. Unlike traditional magnetic and flash storage, glass storage relies on the physical stability of inorganic silicate materials, validated through accelerated aging tests that show data can be securely stored for over 10,000 years at room temperature.
