South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution Ltd. has made significant strides in developing advanced technology that enhances both the charging speed and safety of all-solid-state batteries. The company announced on Wednesday that its collaborative research with Professor Shirley Meng from the University of Chicago has been published in Joule, a prominent academic journal in the energy sector.
The paper, titled “Grain Selection Growth of Soft Metal in Electrochemical Processes,” introduces a groundbreaking method aimed at improving the performance of solid-state batteries. This innovative technology regulates the grain growth of soft metals like lithium by creating an interfacial layer that promotes desirable grain growth and ensures uniform electro-deposition.
According to Professor Meng’s research team, this advancement could potentially increase the charging speed of all-solid-state batteries by more than tenfold while also significantly enhancing battery safety. With these findings, LG Energy Solution intends to intensify its efforts to develop anode-free solid-state batteries. These batteries represent a revolutionary leap in battery technology, as they optimize energy density while being lighter and more compact.
This development marks a notable progression in the quest for safer and more efficient battery solutions.
