LG Energy Solution Develops Technology for Safer Solid-State Batteries
South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution Ltd. has made significant strides in enhancing the safety and charging speed of all-solid-state batteries through newly developed technology. The company announced on Wednesday that its collaborative research with Professor Shirley Meng from the University of Chicago has been published in Joule, a leading academic journal in the energy sector.
The research paper, titled “Grain Selection Growth of Soft Metal in Electrochemical Processes,” presents a groundbreaking method aimed at improving the performance of solid-state batteries. This innovative technology manages the grain growth of soft metals, such as lithium, by designing an interfacial layer that promotes desirable grain growth and uniform electro-deposition.
According to Professor Meng’s research team, this advancement could enhance the charging speed of all-solid-state batteries by more than tenfold while also significantly improving battery safety. With these promising findings, LG Energy Solution intends to intensify its efforts to develop anode-free solid-state batteries. These batteries are viewed as a revolutionary advancement in battery technology, as they optimize energy density while being lighter and more compact.
