LG Energy Solution Develops Technology for Safer Solid-State Batteries
South Korean battery leader LG Energy Solution Ltd. has made significant strides in enhancing the charging speed and safety of all-solid-state batteries through the development of advanced technology. On Wednesday, the company announced that its collaborative research with Professor Shirley Meng from the University of Chicago has been published in the esteemed energy journal, Joule.
The research paper, titled “Grain Selection Growth of Soft Metal in Electrochemical Processes,” presents a groundbreaking method aimed at improving the performance of solid-state batteries. This innovative technology regulates the grain growth of soft metals, such as lithium, by creating an interfacial layer that promotes optimal grain growth and uniform electro-deposition.
According to Professor Meng’s research team, this advancement could increase the charging speed of all-solid-state batteries by more than ten times, while also significantly enhancing battery safety. With these promising findings, LG Energy Solution intends to intensify its efforts in developing anode-free solid-state batteries.
Anode-free solid-state batteries are viewed as a revolutionary leap in battery technology, as they optimize energy density while reducing weight and volume.
