South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution Ltd. has made significant strides in battery technology by developing a groundbreaking method that enhances both the charging speed and safety of all-solid-state batteries. The company announced this achievement on Wednesday, revealing that its collaborative research with Professor Shirley Meng from the University of Chicago has been published in the esteemed academic journal Joule.
The research paper, titled “Grain Selection Growth of Soft Metal in Electrochemical Processes,” introduces an innovative technique aimed at improving the performance of solid-state batteries. This technology effectively controls the grain growth of soft metals, such as lithium, by designing an interfacial layer that promotes desired grain growth and uniform electro-deposition.
According to Professor Meng’s research team, this advancement could potentially increase the charging speed of all-solid-state batteries by over ten times while also significantly boosting battery safety. With these promising findings, LG Energy Solution is set to intensify its efforts in the development of anode-free solid-state batteries. These batteries are viewed as a revolutionary leap in battery technology, as they offer enhanced energy density while being lighter and more compact.
This development marks a critical step forward in the pursuit of safer and more efficient battery solutions.
