Exclusive | Should Energy Storage Self-Regulate? Over 20 Industry Giants, Including CATL, Discuss Initiative Behind Closed Doors
On April 15, it was reported that following self-regulatory actions in the photovoltaic industry, the photovoltaic inverter and energy storage sectors may soon follow suit. According to sources, the China Photovoltaic Industry Association recently held a closed-door symposium aimed at preventing “involution” and vicious competition within the photovoltaic inverter and energy storage industries. The meeting preliminarily reviewed an initiative for the healthy development of these sectors.
The closed-door meeting was attended by executives from over 20 leading companies. Notable participants included Sunpower, Huawei, CRRC, CATL, Yiwei Lithium Energy, Goodwe, Growatt, Ginlong, Shangneng Electric, Chint, TBEA, HeMai, HeWang, DeYe, Shouhang New Energy, Yuneng Technology, Yuanjing, among others.
According to attendees, the initiative does not address pricing, quotas, or deposit matters, and has recently completed a round of soliciting opinions.
In recent years, the market prices for photovoltaic inverters and energy storage products have continued to decline, raising concerns about the risk of irrational competition leading to a vicious cycle. By March 2025, the price of energy storage systems hit a new low, entering the “0.3 yuan era.” In the recent tenders conducted from January to March this year, the bid prices for photovoltaic inverters remained relatively stable, with the lowest price dropping to 0.082 yuan/W and the highest winning bid reaching 0.293 yuan/W.
