KEY 2025 Reflects a Commitment to Innovation and the Energy Transition
KEY 2025 has officially commenced, showcasing “the vitality, the desire to innovate, and the willingness to take risks in the energy transition as a catalyst for growth,” as stated by Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security. From March 5 to March 7, the Rimini Expo Centre is hosting KEY – The Energy Transition Expo, an essential event organized by the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG) that focuses on the future of energy across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean region.
The exhibition features over 1,000 exhibitors, a 20% increase from 2024, with more than 30% of them coming from international markets. Thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), the Italian Trade Agency, and leading industry associations, around 350 hosted buyers and delegations from over 50 countries are participating, with North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe being the most represented regions.
The Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony took place on March 5, 2025, under the Lorenzo Cagnoni Dome in the South Hall, featuring remarks from Maurizio Ermeti, President of IEG, Michele De Pascale, President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Anna Montini, Rimini City Councillor for Ecological Transition, and Paolo Arrigoni, President of GSE.
In his address, IEG President Maurizio Ermeti highlighted the global energy landscape, referencing the World Energy Outlook’s projection that by 2030, renewables and non-fossil sources will account for more than half of the world’s electricity. He noted Italy’s progress, with renewables already reaching 41.2% of national demand in 2024, and the goal of approximately 60% by 2030 as outlined in the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate. Ermeti emphasized that KEY is a virtuous trade show that enhances a strategic sector with significant economic and competitive implications. He remarked on the event’s unique approach, which covers energy transition and efficiency comprehensively, rather than focusing on a single technology or sector.
Minister Fratin elaborated on Italy’s commitment to a clear energy direction through the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (NPIEC), focusing on renewables while pragmatically managing traditional energy sources. He emphasized Italy’s potential for decarbonization, including clean and sustainable nuclear power, and the need for institutions to support the industrial landscape in this global and territorial challenge.
De Pascale remarked on Emilia-Romagna’s longstanding reputation for innovation and sustainability, stating that KEY serves as a platform for international dialogue on energy transition challenges. He emphasized the region’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality before 2050 through a transformative mindset and a realistic medium- to long-term strategy focused on supply security, cost competitiveness, and minimal carbon footprints.
Rimini City Councillor Anna Montini underscored the critical importance of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions for the planet’s future, advocating for local institutions to promote innovative and sustainable growth models.
Paolo Arrigoni concluded with the significance of KEY in fostering dialogue among institutions, companies, and industry stakeholders. He highlighted GSE’s readiness to provide tools, expertise, and vision to turn energy transition goals into practical opportunities for economic growth, focusing on operability, support for companies and public administrations, and digital innovation.
Innovations and Insights
The exhibition also showcases numerous innovations that reflect the sector’s drive to address future needs. From aesthetically pleasing photovoltaic panels to cutting-edge renewable energy solutions aimed at making homes more sustainable, the event highlights the industry’s commitment to progress. Additionally, the National Sustainable Electric Cars Race for Students (SEL3C4RS) is being promoted to instill a culture of sustainability and electric mobility among young students, helping them acquire essential skills for their education and future careers.
