Kalmar Launches Next-Generation Lithium-Ion Battery Technology
Kalmar has unveiled its second-generation lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery solution, designed for its range of electrically powered counterbalanced equipment, including reachstackers, empty container handlers, and forklifts. This new battery system boasts enhanced energy capacity, improved thermal stability, and a longer, more predictable performance curve across various operating environments.
The solution is now available globally in accordance with European standards, with versions for the US and other markets expected to launch in 2026. Building on the success of its previous Li-ion technology, Kalmar’s Gen 2 battery has been developed to meet the increasing demands of customers who are looking for safer, more efficient, and more sustainable cargo-handling solutions.
The new battery incorporates advanced cell chemistry that extends its life cycle and offers greater energy throughput compared to its predecessor. Customers can anticipate consistent and reliable performance over the long term, leading to reduced battery replacement costs and simpler shift planning, which ultimately contributes to a lower total cost of ownership.
With the Gen 2 solution, Kalmar’s electric equipment will significantly enhance battery capacity. For instance, Kalmar electric reachstackers can operate for up to 10 hours in heavy-duty applications, providing greater flexibility and uptime in challenging terminal environments. Additionally, the Gen 2 battery enhances thermal resilience, ensuring improved operational safety and stability, particularly in hotter climates.
Peter Berndtson, Vice President of the Counter Balanced Product Line at Kalmar, stated, “Our second-generation battery is a major step forward in helping our customers transition to fully electric fleets without compromising performance. The enhanced safety, longer lifespan, and improved operating times give our customers a high level of predictability and peace of mind when managing their operations.”
Kalmar remains at the forefront of developing advanced, eco-efficient solutions for the material handling industry, supporting customers in achieving their electrification and sustainability goals.
