Jiangsu Launches National Key R&D Plan to Advance Solar Power Integration, Ranking Among Top Three in China

Jiangsu

Jiangsu Province has officially launched a key national research and development program, making significant strides in solar power integration. The project, led by State Grid Nanjing Automation Co., Ltd., focuses on the “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Photovoltaic Medium Voltage Direct Current Power Generation Systems and Core Components.” The initial implementation will take place in Yancheng, Jiangsu.

According to statistics from the National Energy Administration, as of the end of April, China’s total installed power generation capacity reached 3.49 billion kilowatts, marking a 15.9% increase year-on-year. Of this, solar power capacity stands at 990 million kilowatts, reflecting a 47.7% growth. Photovoltaic power generation is a primary form of solar energy, contributing significantly to the new energy landscape.

As a major economic and energy province, Jiangsu has been steadily advancing its renewable energy initiatives, particularly in photovoltaic and wind energy. The national R&D program, spearheaded by State Grid Nanjing Automation, aims to address critical technological challenges in large-scale photovoltaic systems. During the launch meeting, Liu Ying, the company’s director and general manager, provided an overview of the project.

The project will involve collaborations with Tsinghua University, North China Electric Power University, Huadian Jiangsu Energy, and 14 other prestigious institutions and enterprises. Its goal is to overcome key technological barriers in large-scale photovoltaic direct current systems, thereby supporting the national “dual carbon” strategy.

This national key R&D program focuses on significant social and economic issues, addressing critical technological challenges and enhancing the country’s core competitiveness and innovation capabilities. It aims to provide ongoing support for major sectors of the national economy and social development.

The project consultation and review meeting was chaired by Professor Zhu Rui from Peking University’s Physics Department, with input from eight consulting experts from organizations such as the State Grid Energy Research Institute. They reviewed the project plans and provided valuable feedback to ensure high-quality project implementation.

The expert panel thoroughly evaluated the project team’s breakdown of tasks, research objectives, implementation timelines, management structures, presentation formats, testing methods, and funding allocations, ultimately approving the project implementation plan.

Project leaders have committed to advancing the research and application of the “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Photovoltaic Medium Voltage Direct Current Power Generation Systems,” contributing to the development of a new energy system and power grid in China. The initiative is expected to enhance the transmission efficiency of megawatt-level renewable energy collection systems and facilitate the practical and scalable development of large-scale photovoltaic technologies.

As of the end of April this year, Jiangsu ranks among the top three provinces in the country for cumulative photovoltaic power generation capacity, trailing only Shandong and Hebei.
