From Scaled Development to Comprehensive Commercialization! The 13th International Energy Storage Summit and Exhibition Opens Grandly

On April 10, 2025, the world’s premier energy storage event, the 13th International Energy Storage Summit and Exhibition (ESIE2025), officially opened at the Beijing Capital International Exhibition Center. Organized by the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, the China Energy Research Society, and the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, this year’s summit is themed “Digital Intelligence Empowers Industrial Transformation, Energy Storage Reshapes Energy Landscape.” The opening ceremony brought together over 1,000 participants, including government officials, research institutions, grid companies, power generation groups, and leading enterprises from the energy storage industry. The event was also live-streamed online, attracting more than 2.3 million viewers.

This year's summit reached new heights with record-breaking statistics: 160,000 square meters of exhibition space, nearly 800 exhibitors, over 50 conference activities, and more than 100 new product launches. The first day alone saw over 50,000 attendees on-site.

Keynote Speakers and Guests

The event featured remarks from prominent figures such as Shi Yubo, Chairman of the China Energy Research Society; Bian Guangqi, Deputy Director of the Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration; Zhou Haiyan, Second-Level Inspector of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; and Meng Qingqiang, Chief Engineer of the State Grid. Distinguished academicians including Yang Yusheng, Zhou Xiaoxin, Sun Shigang, He Yaling, Zhaotianshou, Ding Yulong, and Sun Jinhua were also in attendance.

Policy Direction and Market Trends

Currently, the energy storage industry is at a crucial juncture in its transition to a market-oriented model. The introduction of the "Document 136" signifies a profound shift from policy-driven to market-led developments in energy storage. Bian Guangqi emphasized that the National Energy Administration will continue to promote the development of new energy storage technologies and industries, focusing on enhancing planning, supporting technological innovation, guiding reasonable resource allocation, and fostering healthy industry growth.

Zhou Haiyan stated that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will strengthen industry management and implement standards for lithium battery sectors, guiding technological advancements and transformations in the energy storage battery industry. Meng Qingqiang revealed that by the end of 2024, the installed capacity of new energy storage in the State Grid will reach 58.6 GW/137.9 GWh, primarily serving power source and grid-side applications.

Innovative Technologies and Developments

He Yaling, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented a keynote on the development and trends of large-scale energy storage technologies, highlighting the disruptive and revolutionary nature of new technologies. He stressed that technological innovation must address both cost efficiency and safety lifespan.

The summit also featured a series of discussions focusing on the development of new energy storage policies, including a "Closed-Door Meeting for Energy Storage Leaders" and a "Forum on New Energy Storage and Electricity Markets," tackling core issues like pricing mechanisms and auxiliary service market construction.

Future Opportunities and Challenges

In the context of the full marketization of new energy, the energy storage industry is transitioning from "scale expansion" to "value creation." The "ESIE2025 Energy Storage Leaders High-end Dialogue" focused on the opportunities and challenges presented by this market transition. Eight industry experts and leaders gathered to discuss strategies and future directions for the energy storage sector in light of the new energy market.

This summit aimed to foster a platform for intellectual exchange, technological interaction, and cooperative success, contributing to the transformation of global energy systems with innovative ideas and solutions from China.
