A New Method for Verifying Energy Losses in Battery Cells

Daniel Poposki, an industrial Ph.D. student from Volvo Group Trucks Technology, is set to speak at the EVS38 conference, the largest international event focused on electric vehicles and sustainable transport, taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden, from June 15 to 18. Alongside him, several other experts from the Department of Electrical Engineering will also present their findings.

Daniel is collaborating on a publication with Andrew Mandeya from Volvo Group, as well as Istaq Ahmed and Torbjörn Thiringer from Chalmers University of Technology. Their research has led to significant insights into heat generation in battery cells by accurately measuring minimal heat losses with high sensitivity.

“We have utilized a specialized device known as an isothermal calorimeter to quantify heat flows from the battery down to 6 mW,” Daniel explains. “This innovative method allows us to study the battery’s entropic profile in greater detail. This information is crucial for designing the thermal management systems surrounding the battery and for modeling its performance.”

This research holds particular relevance for studies on batteries and applications in electric vehicles. “Understanding how a battery’s thermal behavior impacts its performance, lifespan, and safety is vital,” says Daniel.

The distinct advantage of this measurement method lies in its high sensitivity, which enables the analysis of very small heat flows. This capability can enhance the accuracy of battery modeling and the design of thermal control systems.

“Our next objective is to further refine this method and utilize it to characterize battery cells in our ongoing research at the department. Ultimately, we aspire for our findings to contribute to the development of energy-efficient and safe battery systems through improved thermal models and cooling systems—benefiting the electric transport systems of the future,” Daniel adds.
