Innovative Company Unveils Cutting-Edge Solution for Battery Fire Risks — Here’s How It Could Transform Electric Vehicles

A French battery manufacturer has introduced a groundbreaking 500-kilowatt modular system featuring immersive cooling technology aimed at enhancing safety for electric vehicles in heavy industries, as well as for smaller electric vehicles (EVs). According to Interesting Engineering, WATTALPS developed this cooling system to mitigate the risk of overheating in batteries, which is particularly crucial for high-power systems that generate significant heat.

Lithium-ion batteries, the most prevalent type on the market, can exhibit instability when exposed to extreme temperatures. If battery cells are damaged or produce more heat than they can dissipate, this can lead to a phenomenon known as thermal runaway, where a self-sustaining reaction may cause the batteries to ignite or explode. This risk is especially pronounced in heavy machinery that demands substantial power and relies on rapid charging to minimize downtime, often resulting in considerable heat generation.

WATTALPS employs a dielectric liquid cooling system within the battery’s protective casing to draw heat away from the internal cells, thereby preserving their integrity. This nonflammable liquid effectively cools the battery cells during operation and fast charging, addressing potential overheating scenarios. Additionally, the system incorporates a thermal management mechanism to actively control the heat produced by the battery packs.

This modular system can be configured to operate between 48 to 800 volts, with a maximum storage capacity of 500 kW. Thanks to its immersive cooling capabilities, the battery packs can function in temperatures ranging from -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, making it adaptable for a diverse array of vehicles, from construction equipment to smaller EVs, and suitable for both land and marine applications.

These technological advancements not only enhance workplace safety on construction sites but also pave the way for increased electrification opportunities. Battery-powered vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, are quieter, and require less maintenance compared to internal combustion engines, making them beneficial for workers and surrounding communities. Moreover, they can be charged using electricity from renewable sources, and smaller vehicles have the added advantage of utilizing home solar panel systems for recharging, which can lower energy costs and provide added convenience.
