According to a report by China Science News published on March 4, 2026, researchers from Sun Yat-sen University have developed a new class of intelligent robotic systems capable of two-dimensional sea surface monitoring and pipeline inspection. These advancements are primarily driven by high-performance motion models that simulate various aquatic environments, including turbulent flow and marine organisms.
The robotic systems are equipped with three degrees of freedom, designed to mimic marine life while maintaining lightweight structures. They utilize advanced algorithms to adapt to changing environments, achieving a remarkable accuracy rate of 99.17% in terrain classification. This adaptation strategy enhances the operational efficiency of the robots by 19.1% and increases their speed by 9.2%, demonstrating their stability in turbulent conditions.
In addition, researchers have introduced a model of robotic systems that can operate in low-viscosity environments, utilizing a streamlined design and incorporating advanced sensor technologies. These robots are capable of performing tasks in narrow pipelines with diameters ranging from 39mm to 60mm and can navigate angles from 0 to 90 degrees. The design supports quick response times, enabling effective inspection operations.
Among the new developments, the soft-bodied robotic systems have achieved significant milestones in environmental adaptability, while the hard-bodied robotic systems excel in performance within confined spaces.
