Hydrogen is taking off! This cycling event makes Xinji more hydrogen newsworthy! On April 22, in celebration of the 56th Earth Day, the “Hydrogen for the Future, Riding Towards ‘Xinji’” hydrogen bicycle experience event was held at the International Leather City in Xinji. This initiative is part of the city’s strong push to integrate cultural tourism with various industries, achieving a deep and multi-dimensional interaction. The event aims to promote a low-carbon lifestyle through green cycling and showcases Xinji’s innovative breakthroughs and ecological cooperative development in the hydrogen energy sector.
During the event, city leaders including Zong Zhenhua, Wang Xinkai, Qiao Zichao, and Yan Wenxia attended, along with Wang Peng, deputy secretary of the Institute of Geographic Sciences at the Provincial Academy of Sciences, and Ma Xia, chairman and CEO of United Hydrogen Group. At the opening ceremony, Mayor Zong Zhenhua officially launched the event, while Wang Xinkai provided an overview of the local hydrogen industry. Ma Xia also addressed the audience on behalf of hydrogen enterprises.
With the sound of a starting horn, a cycling team of 50 hydrogen bicycle riders and 50 traditional cyclists set off, marking the beginning of a cycling feast that combines technology and nature. The carefully planned cycling route connected key urban landmarks such as the International Leather City, Qinghe Bay Park, Runze Lake Park, and Jinxiu Park, covering a total of 15.73 kilometers of ecological greenways. This route vividly illustrates Xinji’s innovative practices in promoting industrial transformation and ecological construction.
A cyclist from Beijing, Zhu Lili, shared her experience, saying, “I came from Beijing and I love cycling. I only consumed 2% of my energy after riding for 56 minutes. It’s convenient, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly. On Earth Day, riding a hydrogen bicycle in beautiful Xinji makes me feel more connected to caring for the planet and embracing a bright future with hydrogen energy. I’m very happy!”
Another rider, Ji Weizhen, commented, “Today, I came to experience the hydrogen bicycle. It feels incredibly light and convenient to ride, and it’s pollution-free and environmentally friendly—perfect for us common folks!”
At three locations—Qinghe Bay Park, Runze Lake Park, and Jinxiu Park—activities included a checkpoint challenge, a theme exhibition of provincial intangible cultural heritage featuring farmer paintings, a display of Xinji’s specialty products, and promotional activities for Earth Day, attracting numerous citizens to participate. The blend of traditional culture and modern technology allowed for a vibrant spring atmosphere and a rich cultural experience, showcasing the potential of integrating cultural tourism with various industries.
Self-media cyclist Zhao Meilin expressed, “I captured images of Xinji’s streets and the farmer paintings, which look great. I also filmed the cycling atmosphere, which was very relaxed and joyful. I’m posting a video on Douyin to let more people know about Xinji and hydrogen bicycles!”
After the cycling event, city leaders and guests awarded commemorative medals to 10 representative cyclists. The event also showcased products related to hydrogen healthcare, promoting the city’s new breakthroughs and highlights in hydrogen industry development, aiming to bring hydrogen energy from the laboratory to production lines and households, thus opening new fields of hydrogen applications and lifestyles.
This cycling experience event is a significant step for Xinji City in promoting the hydrogen energy industry. The hydrogen bicycles, a major highlight of the event, were all provided by United Hydrogen. These bicycles utilize hydrogen fuel cells as their core power unit, efficiently releasing energy through the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, offering a range of 50-70 kilometers. Compared to traditional electric bicycles, they have doubled the endurance while maintaining the same weight and size, providing riders with an innovative zero-carbon cycling experience.
Chen Jie, project director at United Hydrogen, explained, “The technology of hydrogen bicycles is based on hydrogen fuel cell systems, which generate electricity through the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to drive the vehicle. They are much more environmentally friendly than traditional bicycles, producing only water without any harmful emissions during operation. They also have a strong endurance capability and a fast refueling time of about one minute. They adapt well to extreme cold, ensuring safety.”
As a key urban hydrogen operator introduced in Xinji, United Hydrogen is actively unlocking the unlimited potential of the hydrogen industry through innovative practices. Together with Xinji, they aim to promote the application and popularization of hydrogen technology in green transportation, making hydrogen energy accessible to every household and injecting sustainable vitality into the city.
Yang Jing, president of United Hydrogen’s commercial application division, stated, “This event marks the first step in establishing a hydrogen life service center in Xinji after our signing. It completes the application scene for micro-transportation in the hydrogen industry. The event connected local hydrogen industry chains with companies such as Ausen Steel, Kingston, and Feitian Petrochemical, showcasing the complete hydrogen supply chain from production to storage and use in Xinji, strengthening local business collaboration and revealing the vitality of the hydrogen industry in the city.”
Li Yanhua, director of the Investment Promotion Bureau of the Economic Development Zone, remarked, “This event is both a multidimensional showcase of Xinji’s hydrogen industry and a promotion of green energy in daily life. Through deep engagement and educational outreach, we aim to help residents experience the allure of hydrogen technology. Moving forward, our economic development zone will focus on precise investment attraction for the industry chain while creating a fund to foster collaborative development between production, academia, and research. We strive to establish an industrial ecosystem within three to five years and create a model demonstration area for Xinji’s hydrogen energy industry.”
As one of the second batch of national demonstration cities for fuel cell vehicle applications, Xinji actively responds to the national “dual carbon” strategy, vigorously developing the hydrogen energy industry. The city is accelerating the establishment of manufacturing bases for fuel cell engines and key components, hydrogen production projects from industrial by-products, hydrogen-electric-oil-gas integrated energy stations, and heavy-duty applications in the steel and logistics industries. Xinji is committed to establishing a complete hydrogen energy industry chain encompassing production, storage, transportation, refueling, and utilization, embodying the principles of low-carbon and high-quality development while promoting green transportation.
The “dual carbon” goals are driving industrial transformation and green transition. Xinji is determined to continue upgrading green configurations, enhancing ecological aesthetics, empowering a low-carbon future with technology, and driving innovation for a green transformation. Xinji is writing a new chapter of high-quality development in the hydrogen energy industry with vigorous momentum.
