Innovative Integration for a Future Built on Intelligence | Huawei Leads the Energy Storage Industry into a New Era of Network-Oriented Energy Storage

On March 14, 2025, at the Sichuan Energy Storage Industry Development Forum held in Chengdu, Huawei Digital Energy delivered a presentation themed “Challenges of Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Grid Integration under New Power Systems and Network Solutions.” This event brought together experts, corporate representatives, and institutions from the renewable energy sector to discuss technological innovations and practical applications, continuously injecting momentum into the construction of a green, low-carbon, and sustainable new power system.

As the global push for carbon neutrality accelerates, renewable energy has become a core element in building new power systems, transitioning from a supplementary power source to a primary one. This shift brings challenges, particularly with the integration of high proportions of intermittent renewable energy sources, which can impact grid stability. Common issues include wide-frequency oscillation, transient overvoltage, power quality degradation, and the stability of islanded photovoltaic and energy storage systems.

Currently, enhancing the grid performance of electric power sources, such as wind and solar storage, is crucial for the sustainable development of renewable energy. Huawei has long focused on improving the safety and stability of renewable energy grid integration. By merging digital technology with power electronics, and leveraging its expertise in new materials, chip design, and active/passive components, Huawei collaborates with global power generation companies, grid operators, and energy users to advance technologies that enhance grid friendliness.

Between 2021 and 2024, Huawei transitioned from verifying MWh-level network-oriented energy storage technology to applying GWh-level network-oriented energy storage projects. This marked a significant milestone as the industry’s first successful field test of network-oriented energy storage in weak grid conditions, demonstrating its capability to address voltage stability, frequency stability, power angle stability, and low-frequency oscillation issues under such conditions.

The key innovations of Huawei’s intelligent string-type network-oriented energy storage system include:

  1. Development of multi-site self-synchronization amplitude-frequency modulation technology, achieving self-synchronized parallel networking. This enhances proactive fast reactive response, active support, fault ride-through, load shock resistance, and synchronous black start capabilities across various scenarios.
  2. Introduction of wide-frequency self-stabilization and stabilization control technology, enabling stable grid integration and suppression of wide-frequency oscillations under different grid scales and strengths. This improves the capability to operate in parallel with various power sources, such as photovoltaics, wind energy, and synchronous generators, thereby expanding the application scenarios for network-oriented energy storage systems.
  3. Creation of a novel dual-stage conversion architecture for intelligent string-type energy storage, featuring voltage and active power decoupled control technology. This supports grid stability, ensures the safety of energy storage systems, and enhances their availability and scalability. Additionally, AI and digital-based refined intelligent battery management technology has been developed to improve constant power output across the entire State of Charge (SOC) range, eliminate manual calibration for SOC, and provide early warning for various faults.
  4. Development of power modules and control chips for network-oriented energy storage, facilitating transient high-rate active and reactive power support. A new moisture-resistant material transfer molding technology has been proposed to enhance long-term reliable operation in complex and harsh environmental conditions, establishing a robust design and manufacturing capability for core components.

Through continuous innovation, Huawei Digital Energy is integrating digital technology with power electronics to foster the healthy and high-quality development of the energy storage industry. This effort aims to build a safer and more reliable energy infrastructure for new power systems, contributing to a global future of green, low-carbon, and sustainable energy.
