SHANGHAI, June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei Digital Power, in partnership with SchneiTec, has successfully launched Cambodia’s first TÜV SÜD-certified grid-forming energy storage project, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey toward a sustainable energy future. As a prominent energy solutions provider in the region, SchneiTec has previously developed the largest solar power plant in Cambodia.
The newly completed energy storage project boasts a capacity of 12MWh, which includes a 2MWh testbed designed to validate Huawei’s Smart String Grid-Forming Energy Storage System (ESS) technology. This advanced system has showcased its exceptional ability to stabilize the grid in both off-grid and weak-grid scenarios, facilitating the seamless integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. The project has received authoritative certification from TÜV SÜD, representing Cambodia’s first grid-forming ESS deployment and laying a strong foundation for future capacity expansion and large-scale energy infrastructure development.
The project was jointly tested by TÜV SÜD, SchneiTec, and Huawei Digital Power. TÜV SÜD, known worldwide for its rigorous standards in energy technology testing and certification, verified the key technical capabilities of Huawei’s Smart String Grid-Forming ESS. These capabilities include inertia response, high/low voltage ride-through, frequency support, and overload performance.
**Key Testing Highlights:**
– **Grid-forming inertia:** Huawei’s technology exhibited outstanding inertia response performance, achieving an inertia time constant (Tj) range of 3–20 seconds, which exceeds the standard requirement of 3–12 seconds, allowing for quicker grid stabilization.
– **Low/high voltage ride-through:** The system effectively managed voltage fluctuations, ensuring grid stability during short-term dips and surges, operating across a wide voltage range from 5% to 130% of the rated grid voltage.
– **Overload and frequency support:** The grid-forming ESS operated reliably under short-term overload conditions of up to 300% and effectively suppressed low-frequency oscillations across the 0.2Hz–5Hz range.
– **Black start:** The technology enabled rapid black start capability under load, facilitating efficient grid restoration after a complete outage.
This independent verification of Huawei’s grid-forming ESS technology represents the first overseas on-site validation of the system in full compliance with international standards, including IEC, China National Standards, the UK Grid Code, and Germany’s VDE standards.
Obtaining TÜV SÜD certification confirms that Huawei’s grid-forming ESS technology meets globally recognized benchmarks for energy management and grid stability. This achievement marks a significant step in Huawei Digital Power’s technological development journey and signifies a landmark moment in the evolution of energy sector innovation.
The successful collaboration between Huawei Digital Power and SchneiTec indicates a vital advancement in Cambodia’s renewable energy transition. As the country progresses along its renewable energy roadmap, Huawei Digital Power will continue to foster innovation, providing stable, scalable, and reliable solutions to meet the growing demand for sustainable electricity and supporting the enhancement of its energy infrastructure.
