SHANGHAI, June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei Digital Power, in partnership with SchneiTec, has successfully launched Cambodia’s first TÜV SÜD-certified grid-forming energy storage project, marking a significant step toward a sustainable energy future for the country. SchneiTec has previously established Cambodia’s largest solar power plant, solidifying its reputation as a leading energy solutions provider in the region.
This newly completed 12MWh energy storage project features a 2MWh testbed specifically designed to validate Huawei’s Smart String Grid-Forming ESS technology. The system has proven its remarkable ability to stabilize the grid in both off-grid and weak-grid situations, effectively integrating intermittent renewable energy sources. This achievement has been officially certified by TÜV SÜD, representing Cambodia’s first deployment of a grid-forming energy storage system (ESS) and laying a strong foundation for future capacity expansion and large-scale energy infrastructure development.
The project underwent rigorous testing by TÜV SÜD, SchneiTec, and Huawei Digital Power. TÜV SÜD, a globally recognized authority in energy technology testing and certification, verified key technical capabilities of Huawei’s Smart String Grid-Forming ESS, which include inertia response, high/low voltage ride-through, frequency support, and overload performance.
Key Testing Highlights:
– **Grid-forming inertia**: Huawei’s technology showcased impressive inertia response performance, achieving an inertia time constant (Tj) range of 3–20 seconds, significantly exceeding the standard requirement of 3–12 seconds, thus enabling faster grid stabilization.
– **Low/high voltage ride-through**: The system effectively managed voltage fluctuations, maintaining grid stability during short-term voltage dips and surges. It operated across a broad voltage range from 5% to 130% of the rated grid voltage.
– **Overload and frequency support**: The grid-forming ESS functioned reliably under short-term overload conditions of up to 300% and effectively mitigated low-frequency oscillations in the 0.2Hz–5Hz range.
– **Black start**: The technology facilitated rapid black start capabilities under load, allowing for efficient grid restoration following a complete outage.
This independent validation of Huawei’s grid-forming ESS technology marks the first overseas on-site verification of the system, fully compliant with international standards, including IEC, China National Standards, the UK Grid Code, and Germany’s VDE standards.
Achieving TÜV SÜD certification demonstrates that Huawei’s grid-forming ESS technology meets internationally recognized benchmarks for energy management and grid stability. This accomplishment not only highlights Huawei Digital Power’s technological advancements but also signifies a pivotal moment in energy sector innovation. The successful collaboration between Huawei Digital Power and SchneiTec represents a significant leap forward in Cambodia’s renewable energy transition. As the country progresses on its renewable energy roadmap, Huawei Digital Power is committed to driving innovation, providing stable, scalable, and reliable solutions to meet the growing demand for sustainable electricity, and supporting the development of its energy infrastructure.
