How do the efficiencies of perovskite solar panels compare to silicon-based panels

Perovskite solar panels have demonstrated efficiencies comparable to conventional silicon-based solar cells in laboratory settings. Single-junction perovskite cells have reached efficiencies around 26.1% to 25.7% in recent years, matching those of silicon cells under similar conditions.

The most significant efficiency gains come from combining perovskite with silicon in tandem solar cells, where a layer of perovskite is placed on top of silicon. This arrangement leverages perovskite’s ability to absorb parts of the solar spectrum that silicon cannot efficiently capture, while silicon provides stability. Such perovskite-silicon tandem cells have achieved efficiencies as high as approximately 34.6%, significantly surpassing the typical single-material cells.

However, this high efficiency has so far been demonstrated primarily in small-scale laboratory cells rather than commercial-sized panels. Scaling up tends to reduce overall efficiency due to various losses when assembling full panels. Additionally, combining perovskite with silicon increases production costs compared to using perovskite alone.

In summary, compared to silicon-based panels alone, perovskite solar panels achieve similar peak efficiencies on their own but reach substantially higher efficiencies when integrated with silicon in tandem cells. Yet, challenges remain in scaling these tandem cells and ensuring long-term stability and cost-effectiveness to make them commercially viable.
