Hithium Completes the World’s First All Open-Door Large-Scale Fire Test
June 11, 2025

Hithium, a leading global energy storage technology company, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by completing the world’s first all open-door large-scale fire test of its ∞Block 5MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This significant accomplishment sets a new safety benchmark in the energy storage industry and addresses growing concerns regarding thermal runaway and other safety incidents in BESS.

The open-door fire test was designed to respond to the urgent need for more rigorous and standardized safety assessments. It included four ultimate test challenges:

– **All open-door combustion**: Throughout the test, the container doors were fully open, creating an unrestricted combustion environment with increased oxygen flow—much more intense than traditional closed-door scenarios.

– **15cm minimum spacing**: The BESS units were positioned side by side and back to back with only 15cm of spacing between them. Despite flames reaching temperatures over 1300°C, there was no thermal propagation, demonstrating effective isolation at close range.

– **Fire suppression system deactivated**: All fire suppression systems were turned off during the test. The system relied solely on its passive fire protection features to endure the prolonged intense fire, showcasing its autonomous fire resistance and reliability.

– **100% State of Charge (SOC)**: The BESS was tested at full capacity to maximize thermal energy release, validating the system’s reliability and stability under the most extreme conditions.

The test was conducted by UL Solutions, a globally recognized safety certification authority, and overseen by certified U.S. fire protection engineers and customers. It adhered strictly to UL 9540A and NFPA 855 safety standards. Remarkably, even after 15 hours of full combustion, the structural integrity of the system remained intact, with no fire spreading to any of the three adjacent containers. This outcome confirms Hithium’s multi-layered passive safety architecture and thermal isolation capabilities, even in the harshest conditions.

This achievement underscores Hithium’s commitment to innovation and quality, offering valuable insights for developing future safety standards in the industry. Looking ahead, Hithium plans to continue enhancing safety performance through advanced technology and global collaboration, propelling the industry toward a safer and more reliable future.
