Innovative Breakthroughs in Soft and Hard Technologies to Solve Thermal Management Issues

A stable temperature is crucial for the operation of energy storage stations. Extreme temperatures can negatively affect efficiency and lifespan, with high temperatures posing serious safety risks, including the potential for battery fires or explosions. “From the battery perspective, there are two main paths to address safety issues: one is the so-called all-solid-state battery, which is unlikely to be commercially viable for at least five years. The other is to address the shortcomings of existing lithium iron phosphate battery technology. Therefore, we are leveraging our 4S+C full-stack self-development, which includes BMS/EMS/PCS/TMS+Cloud, as a strategy to meet the rising demands of energy storage applications,” Zhang Weifeng stated.

Currently, the industry has introduced various solutions to tackle thermal management issues in energy storage systems, primarily focusing on liquid cooling and air cooling. While both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, liquid cooling offers superior heat capacity and thermal conductivity, resulting in faster cooling and enhanced temperature consistency across battery modules. This method has gained widespread recognition due to its ability to significantly improve the safety and economic efficiency of energy storage systems.

However, traditional liquid cooling technology faces challenges such as uneven heat dissipation and condensation, which can lead to electrical leakage risks and corrosion over time, affecting system stability. In High Taihao Energy’s immersion liquid cooling system, the storage battery cells are directly submerged in a cooling liquid, completely isolating them from air and moisture, thereby eliminating the risk of battery combustion and explosion. This approach effectively regulates operating temperatures, ensuring rapid, thorough, and uniform cooling, which promotes long-term stability.

Zhang Weifeng considers the immersion liquid cooling system to be one of the safest thermal management methods currently known. High Taihao Energy has launched an integrated immersion liquid cooling solution that combines cooling, heating, intelligent control, and fire safety, ensuring safe and efficient operation. This system couples the immersion temperature control system with the BMS management system for precise temperature control and intelligent adjustment, enhancing temperature consistency to keep cell temperature differences below 2°C, thus extending battery capacity and cycle life while reducing operational costs.

The system also accommodates higher charge and discharge rates (greater than 1C). Zhang further highlighted that this system employs a semi-closed design, significantly reducing production costs while achieving price parity with traditional liquid cooling products. Additionally, the system’s design allows for top liquid entry, enhancing convective heat transfer while reducing the amount of liquid required by 80%, making it cost-effective compared to similar products.

This immersion liquid cooling system eliminates the need for separate cooling and fire suppression systems, increasing integration and reducing equipment size, making it suitable for high-safety-demand scenarios, even in extreme conditions like frigid temperatures, high altitudes, and windy or sandy environments.

Zhang Weifeng also revealed that the cooling medium’s production process is well-established, and mass production costs are relatively low, fully meeting market demands. This series of products will complete third-party certification by the end of this month and is expected to enter mass production by June of this year.

Beyond product technology, High Taihao Energy has also upgraded its systems. Through continuous research and development of its core energy storage system elements based on the 4S+C closed-loop model, High Taihao Energy has collaborated with Tsinghua University’s team to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its existing system-level products. By utilizing LSTM/Transformer to analyze historical data, the company can predict thermal runaway risks and provide early warnings up to 30 minutes in advance.

The integration of AI technology is a key direction for High Taihao Energy’s development of its thermal runaway warning system. By employing AI predictive models and multi-layer defense mechanisms, the company aims to enhance the safety and reliability of energy storage systems, allowing for early detection of temperature anomalies and gas leaks, triggering alarms 5 to 30 minutes in advance, activating liquid cooling/aerosol fire suppression, and isolating faulty modules to prevent chain reactions, reducing losses by over 80%.

Building a Comprehensive Energy Storage Safety Protection Network to Seize the Safety 2.0 Era

Safety and economic efficiency remain two crucial topics in commercial energy storage. The sector is now shifting from energy management to energy trading, presenting new challenges for energy storage companies. The era of merely pursuing fixed peak-valley price differences is over, as power prices in the spot market fluctuate constantly, requiring energy storage capabilities beyond simple charge and discharge functionalities.

“If we can break down barriers or achieve integrated optimization, energy storage products can access more revenue channels.” However, Zhang Weifeng noted that many companies currently lack adequate integration capabilities. In contrast, High Taihao Energy can help clients rapidly adapt to future application scenario changes, which is the fundamental reason behind its 4S+C comprehensive solution offering.

In addition to the immersion temperature control system and commercial storage solutions, High Taihao Energy has also made numerous technological innovations in BMS and related areas.
