Powering America’s Future: The Case for Solar Energy

As the demand for electricity in America continues to rise, solar energy is stepping up to meet this growing need. Currently, utility-scale solar power generates enough electricity to power 22 million homes. In 2024 alone, a remarkable 33 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity was added to our power grid.

Solar energy is not just a source of clean energy; it is also a significant economic driver. The solar sector employs nearly 261,000 Americans across all 50 states, more than any other clean energy sector. Since 2020, over 20,000 new solar jobs have been created, many of which have been filled by U.S. veterans. These projects also provide substantial benefits to local communities, contributing over $550 million annually in land lease payments to American landowners and $375 million in tax revenues to state and local governments. This influx of funds translates into more resources for schools, infrastructure, and services, along with increased economic opportunities in rural areas.

Solar panels are designed to be safe, efficient, and sustainable. They have a long lifespan, often lasting for decades, even in extreme conditions. Many panels continue to function well past their warranty periods and can frequently be reused or refurbished. Thanks to advancements in recycling technology, over 90% of a panel’s materials can be repurposed.

Additionally, America is ramping up its solar manufacturing capabilities. In 2024, more than 20 U.S. solar component manufacturing facilities were launched, marking the largest expansion of U.S. solar module manufacturing in history. As a result, U.S. solar module manufacturing is on track to meet domestic demand by next year. However, these facilities still depend on an international supply chain for specialty inputs.

Despite the progress, the demand for U.S.-made panels is currently outstripping supply, leading to sold-out inventory for years in advance and necessitating imports to fill the gap. Addressing this gap will require ongoing investment and swift policy action to scale production at a pace that meets the increasing demand.

To maintain this momentum, it is crucial to uphold consistent, long-term policies. Sudden changes in trade or tax regulations can disrupt progress and postpone the clean energy projects that Americans and businesses rely on for stability and energy security. The path forward necessitates clear and dependable guidelines to encourage investment, strengthen American manufacturing, and facilitate the energy transition.
