Gurīn Energy Selects Saft’s Battery Energy Storage System for First Japanese Project
—
**Tokyo, 12 June 2025** – Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has been chosen by Gurīn Energy, a prominent renewable energy developer in Asia, to supply a battery energy storage system (BESS) for a significant project in Fukushima, Japan. This initiative aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy into Japan’s grid, balancing demand and supply while minimizing energy curtailment.
Saft will provide a fully integrated lithium-ion battery system with over **1 gigawatt-hour (GWh)** of storage capacity, along with power conversion and management systems from its partners. Additionally, Saft’s I-Sight cloud supervision and data management systems, equipped with AI-based functionalities, will be included. The installation, commissioning, and servicing of the BESS will be handled by Saft.
The BESS will be implemented in Gurīn Energy’s stand-alone energy storage project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, which will be capable of delivering over **240 megawatts (MW)** of power for four hours. Construction is anticipated to commence in **2026**.
Large-scale energy storage systems like this one are essential for storing and discharging electricity as needed, allowing grid operators to respond more swiftly and efficiently to energy demand compared to traditional methods. By increasing energy storage capacity, Japan can ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply while preventing the curtailment of renewable resources. This initiative aligns with Japan’s national goal of achieving **40-50 percent** of its power generation mix from renewables by **2040**, an increase from the current **27 percent**, as well as its target of carbon neutrality by **2050**.
Vincent Le Quintrec, Saft’s Sales and Marketing Director for Energy Storage Systems, remarked, “Asia is a vital region for the sustained, long-term growth of Saft’s energy storage systems business. We are proud that Gurīn Energy has chosen Saft for this important project in Japan, which will significantly impact the country’s energy future. Our extensive experience in lithium-ion BESS, combined with Gurīn Energy’s commitment to renewable project development, will play a critical role in Japan’s energy transition.”
Ushio Okuyama, Country Manager for Gurīn Energy in Japan, stated, “At Gurīn Energy, our mission is to accelerate the energy transition in Asia by developing projects that strategically enhance the renewable energy landscape in the region. Our project in Soma City is groundbreaking and will greatly contribute to the flexibility of local, regional, and national power grids. We are thrilled to partner with Saft, a global leader in battery solutions, and are confident in developing a project that will benefit Japan as a whole.”
