Greece Unveils Ambitious 3.5 GW Battery Storage Expansion Plan

Greece

Greece has unveiled an ambitious plan to roll out 3.55 GW of standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS). This initiative, presented in a draft ministerial decision, aims to meet the increasing demand for flexible power and reflects strong investment interest in the energy market.

Originally set at 1.5 GW, the new target significantly surpasses previous deployment scenarios. The Greek government plans to install 2.65 GW of battery projects on the transmission grid, alongside an additional 900 MW on the distribution grid. According to the Greek National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), the country aims to achieve a total of 4.3 GW of storage capacity by 2030. Up to now, 900 MW has already been allocated through tenders from the Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste, and Water (RAAEY).

The remaining capacity will be developed under this new plan, which will operate on a merchant basis without any subsidy support.
