The World Sustainable Development Frontier Forum took place in Hong Kong on January 19, 2026. This event is part of the series of activities for the 2026 IEEE Power and Energy Society International Conference and Hong Kong Green Energy Week, focusing on issues related to energy sustainability and global governance cooperation.
The forum, themed “Sustainable Development of Green Energy and Product Digital Passports,” brought together representatives from UN agencies, international organizations, academia, and industry to discuss the deep integration of green energy, digitalization, and global governance.
During the event, Li Pengde, Director of the UN Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Centre, emphasized that technology is a key driver of energy transition. The Green Energy Week aims to combine green energy initiatives with digital technologies, such as carbon codes and product digital passports, to create a transparent and reliable digital management system for energy and carbon assets, thereby providing feasible solutions for global green transformation.
Zhang Chao, Secretary-General of the International Code Industry Alliance, noted that the global transition to a green and low-carbon economy is accelerating. He pointed out that product digital passports help address current challenges such as inconsistent standards and missing data, while also providing carbon data certificates that comply with international standards for China’s new energy equipment exports.
Xing Lei, Director-General of the World Green Design Organization, stressed that the foundation for achieving green development lies in fundamentally transforming the energy structure. He highlighted that addressing climate change must start with developing green energy. The new generation of green design products, characterized by electrification, intelligence, and low-carbon features, is reshaping fields such as transportation, construction, and industry.
Xue Yongheng, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, remarked that Hong Kong, with its unique advantages of being “backed by the motherland and connected to the world,” has become a crucial hub for global energy technology, talent, and capital. The city’s robust legal system and financial infrastructure provide comprehensive support for the research and application of green technologies.
During the forum, the World Sustainable Development Research Institute released three significant reports: the “Belt and Road Green Energy Cooperation Development Report,” the “Global Carbon Price Index Report,” and the “Annual Assessment Report of the Global Voluntary Emission Trading Market.” These reports serve as references for global energy governance and carbon market development. The institute also signed cooperation agreements with three organizations and companies to promote the integration of green energy and digital technologies. The World Sustainable Development Research Institute, a non-profit research organization headquartered in Hong Kong, serves as the secretariat for this year’s Hong Kong Green Energy Week.
