The World Sustainable Development Frontier Forum took place in Hong Kong on January 19, 2026. This event is part of the “2026 IEEE Power and Energy Society International Conference and Hong Kong Green Energy Week” series, focusing on topics related to sustainable energy development and global governance cooperation.

The forum, themed “Sustainable Development of Green Energy and Product Digital Passports,” brought together representatives from United Nations agencies, international organizations, academia, and industry. They discussed the deep integration of green energy, digitalization, and global governance.

Li Pengde, Director of the UN Global Geospatial Information Knowledge and Innovation Center, emphasized that technology is a key driver of energy transformation. This Green Energy Week aims to combine green energy with digital technologies, such as carbon codes and product digital passports. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the goal is to establish a transparent and trustworthy digital management system for energy and carbon assets, offering feasible solutions for global green transformation.

Zhang Chao, Secretary General of the International Code Industry Alliance, stated that the global transition to a green and low-carbon economy is accelerating. He noted that product digital passports can help address challenges such as inconsistent standards and data gaps. They also provide carbon data certificates for China’s new energy equipment exports that comply with international standards.

Xing Lei, Secretary General of the World Green Design Organization, emphasized that the foundation for achieving green development lies in a fundamental transformation of the energy structure. He stressed the need to address climate change by developing green energy from the source. The new generation of green design products, characterized by electrification, intelligence, and low carbon emissions, is reshaping sectors such as transportation, construction, and industry.

According to Xue Yongheng, Secretary General of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Hong Kong has become a major hub for global energy technology, talent, and capital, benefiting from its unique advantage of being “backed by the motherland and connected to the world.” The city’s robust legal framework and financial system provide comprehensive support for the research and application of green technology.

During the forum, the World Sustainable Development Research Institute released three key reports: the “Belt and Road Green Energy Cooperation Development Report,” the “Global Carbon Price Index Report,” and the “Annual Assessment Report of the Global Voluntary Emission Trading Market.” These reports aim to provide reference points for global energy governance and the development of carbon markets. The institute also signed cooperation agreements with three organizations and enterprises to promote the integration of green energy and digital technologies. The World Sustainable Development Research Institute is a non-profit research organization based in Hong Kong and serves as the secretariat for the Hong Kong Green Energy Week.
