The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) recently announced that from January to August 2025, global vehicle sales reached 61.98 million, with 13.82 million of those being new energy vehicles (NEVs). This indicates that the sales of broad-spectrum new energy vehicles accounted for 28.2% of total global vehicle sales, marking a 1.9 percentage point increase compared to the entire year of 2024. In contrast, the narrow definition of new energy vehicles achieved a market share of 22.3%, demonstrating robust growth.

The overall penetration rate of new energy vehicles has been rising rapidly, reaching 13% in 2022, increasing to 16% in 2023, and 19.9% in 2024. By the third quarter of 2025, this penetration rate is expected to reach 24.4%.

As of August 2025, the penetration rates for new energy vehicles were notably uneven across different countries. In China, the penetration rate stood at 48.2%, while Germany reported 26.4%, Norway 80.2%, the UK 31.9%, the US only 11.1%, and Japan a mere 1.8%.

In the first eight months of this year, the US recorded 1.04 million new energy vehicle sales, reflecting a growth rate of 9%, which is the lowest in recent years. Concerns over impending high tariffs and the potential removal of subsidies have led to price hikes. Nevertheless, August sales in the US reached 164,000, showing a 22% increase compared to the previous month.

In Europe, new energy passenger car sales from January to August 2025 totaled 2.26 million, an increase of 470,000 units or 26% compared to the same period last year. Preliminary data indicates that in August alone, 224,000 new energy passenger vehicles were sold in Europe, representing a 29% increase.

As for the overseas market share of Chinese-made new energy passenger vehicles, it reached 20.8% by August 2025. The improvement in export performance has significantly boosted this share from 14.7% in 2024 to 18.8% in the first eight months of 2025.

As the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in China approaches 50%, other countries are expected to gradually catch up. By August 2025, China’s share of the global new energy passenger vehicle market remained high at 67.6%, with July and August maintaining a consistent share of 68.7%.

In the pure electric vehicle market, China’s share from January to August 2025 was 64.3%, remaining stable compared to 2024. In the plug-in hybrid vehicle segment, China achieved an impressive market share of 75.7%, showcasing its strong performance in this area.
