Significant Update: Global Power Battery Installation Volume for January to March 2025 Released
The global power battery installation volume serves as a vital indicator of the development of the new energy vehicle industry. According to data from South Korea’s SNE Research, the total global power battery installation volume from January to March 2025 reached 221 GWh, representing a substantial year-on-year increase of 38.8%. Currently, the global power battery industry exhibits a high concentration, with the top three manufacturers accounting for 65.7% of the market share. The top ten manufacturers dominate approximately 90% of the market.
So, who are the top ten manufacturers in the global power battery installation volume for January to March 2025? Here’s an overview:
1. CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited) – 84.9 GWh
In the first quarter of 2025, CATL achieved an installation volume of 84.9 GWh, marking a year-on-year growth of 40.2%, slightly above the industry average. Its market share for this period was 38.3%, up from 37.9% during the same period last year, maintaining its position as the industry leader.
2. BYD – 37 GWh
As the world’s largest manufacturer of new energy vehicles, BYD is also a major producer of power batteries. A pioneer in lithium iron phosphate battery technology, BYD has now surpassed ternary lithium batteries to become the mainstream in the industry. The installation volume for BYD in the first quarter was 37 GWh, capturing 16.7% of the market, placing it second globally.
3. LG Energy Solution – 23.8 GWh
LG Energy Solution recorded an installation volume of 23.8 GWh in the first quarter, ranking third globally with a market share of 10.7%. However, the growth rate for LGES power batteries was only 15%, with a year-on-year decline of 2 percentage points in market share. Notably, overseas power batteries differ from domestic ones, predominantly featuring ternary lithium batteries, but are gradually transitioning to lithium iron phosphate technology.
4. SK On – 10.5 GWh
Ranked fourth globally, SK On, a subsidiary of the SK Group from South Korea, achieved an installation volume of 10.5 GWh in the first quarter, holding a market share of 4.7%. SK On is one of four manufacturers with installation volumes exceeding 10 GWh this quarter.
5. Zhongxin Innovation – 8.6 GWh
Based in Changzhou, Jiangsu, Zhongxin Innovation completed 8.6 GWh of installations in the first quarter, ranking fifth in the industry. Originally founded as AVIC Lithium Battery in Luoyang, Henan, the company later moved its headquarters to Changzhou and currently holds a 3.9% share of the global market.
6. Guoxuan High-Tech – 7.7 GWh
Guoxuan High-Tech, a publicly listed power battery manufacturer from Hefei, Anhui, was established in 1995. In the first quarter of 2025, it achieved an installation volume of 7.7 GWh, representing a significant year-on-year increase of 86.6%, with a global market share of 3.5%, ranking sixth in the industry.
7. Samsung SDI – 7.3 GWh
Samsung SDI, benefiting from South Korea’s advanced automotive manufacturing industry, recorded an installation volume of 7.3 GWh in the first quarter, placing it seventh globally. However, its volume declined by 17.2% compared to the same period last year, marking the largest decrease among the top ten manufacturers.
8. Panasonic – 7.2 GWh
While Japan’s automotive industry is highly developed, it has been slow to transition to new energy vehicles. Panasonic is the only Japanese manufacturer among the top ten, with an installation volume of 7.2 GWh and a 2.6% market share, also experiencing a 6.3% decline year-on-year.
9. EVE Energy – 5.7 GWh
In the first quarter of 2025, EVE Energy from Huizhou, Guangdong, ranked ninth globally with an installation volume of 5.7 GWh, holding a 2.6% market share and nearly 60% year-on-year growth.
10. Hive Energy – 5.6 GWh
Hive Energy, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors, achieved an installation volume of 5.6 GWh from January to March, entering the global top ten. Notably, Hive Energy’s installation volume increased by 100.2% year-on-year, making it the fastest-growing manufacturer.
In summary, among the top ten power battery manufacturers globally, six are from China, three are from South Korea, and one is from Japan. Notably, the growth rates for the four Japanese and Korean firms in the first quarter were all below the industry average of 38.8%. LG Energy Solution (growth rate of 15.1%) and SK On (growth rate of 35.6%) performed relatively well, while Samsung SDI and Panasonic experienced negative growth rates of -17.2% and -6.3%, respectively. In contrast, five of China’s six major power battery manufacturers surpassed the market average growth rate, with Hive Energy (100.2%), Guoxuan High-Tech (86.6%), and BYD (62%) all exceeding 60%. Only Zhongxin Innovation (35.6%) slightly fell below the industry growth rate.
This shows that Chinese power battery manufacturers continue to exert pressure on the survival space of their Japanese and Korean counterparts in the global market.
