Giga Storage Acquires 1.4GWh Battery Storage System in Germany

Battery energy storage system (BESS) developer Giga Storage has announced the acquisition of a 350MW/1,400MWh BESS project in Germany, marking its entry into the European energy storage market. This new project, named Giga Albatross, is strategically located near Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony. This acquisition signifies Giga Storage’s first expansion beyond Belgium and the Netherlands into Germany’s rapidly growing energy storage sector.

Situated close to Germany’s North Sea coast, where approximately 9.2GW of offshore wind generation capacity is installed, the Giga Albatross facility continues the company’s tradition of naming projects after animals. The facility will operate between two major high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power lines—A-Nord to the west and SuedLink to the east—thereby enhancing energy transmission from northern Germany to the industrial south.

### Investment Appeal in Germany’s BESS Market

Industry experts regard Germany as one of the most promising markets for BESS development in Europe. The country boasts a robust power market linked to nine neighboring countries, coupled with its renewable energy transition and a planned coal phase-out by 2038. These factors create an ideal environment for BESS deployment. Giga Storage confirmed that its German project will provide essential grid services in “one of Germany’s most important power corridors,” aiding in renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, and local congestion management within the German electricity system.

In addition to its recent German acquisition, Giga Storage’s existing portfolio includes BESS projects in the Netherlands, such as Giga Rhino (7.5MWh) and Giga Buffalo (48MWh). The company is also developing several larger BESS projects, including Giga Leopard (1,200MWh), Giga Giraffe, Giga Lion, Giga Blue Marlin, and Belgium’s Giga Green Turtle, which is its largest project at 700MW/2,800MWh.

Kevin Dijkers, CEO of Giga Storage, credited InfraVia Capital Partners, which acquired the company in May 2024, for facilitating this expansion into Germany. “Our ambition is to develop and operate multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity across Europe in the coming years,” Dijkers stated. “With InfraVia’s backing and our growing project pipeline, we’re moving quickly to achieve this goal, supporting both energy security and decarbonization across key European markets, including Germany.”

### Growth in Germany’s BESS Sector

The German BESS sector has experienced significant activity recently. One of the largest installations, a 103.5MW/238MWh battery asset in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, was recently brought online by Eco Stor. Additionally, TotalEnergies made a final investment decision earlier this year to construct six more BESS projects across Germany.

Last year, in an exclusive article for Energy-Storage.news Premium, Giga Storage’s Chief Commercial Officer, Lars Rupert, outlined the company’s goal of reaching 5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. The importance of Germany’s BESS market was further emphasized during the inaugural Energy Storage Summit Germany 2025, held in Stuttgart, which focused on regulatory challenges, the Capacity Market (CM), and operational structures within the German energy storage ecosystem.
