Giga Storage Acquires 1.4GWh Battery Storage System in Germany

Giga Storage, a developer of battery energy storage systems (BESS), has successfully acquired a 350MW/1,400MWh BESS project in Germany, marking a significant step into the expanding European energy storage market. The new facility, named Giga Albatross, will be strategically situated near Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony, making it Giga Storage’s first foray beyond Belgium and the Netherlands into Germany’s burgeoning energy storage sector.

Located close to Germany’s North Sea coast, which boasts approximately 9.2GW of installed offshore wind capacity, the Giga Albatross project continues the company’s tradition of naming projects after animals. The facility will operate between two significant high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power lines: A-Nord to the west and SuedLink to the east, facilitating enhanced energy transmission from northern Germany to the industrial south.

Germany is considered one of the most attractive markets in Europe for BESS development, thanks to its strong power market, which is interconnected with nine neighboring countries. This, coupled with the country’s renewable energy transition and a planned coal phase-out by 2038, creates an ideal environment for battery storage deployment. Giga Storage has confirmed that the Giga Albatross project will provide essential grid services in “one of Germany’s most important power corridors,” supporting renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, and local congestion management within the German electricity system.

In addition to this new German project, Giga Storage’s existing portfolio includes BESS projects in the Netherlands, such as Giga Rhino (7.5MWh) and Giga Buffalo (48MWh). The company is also working on larger BESS projects, including Giga Leopard (1,200MWh), Giga Giraffe, Giga Lion, Giga Blue Marlin, and Belgium’s Giga Green Turtle, which is the largest at 700MW/2,800MWh.

Kevin Dijkers, CEO of Giga Storage, credited InfraVia Capital Partners, which acquired the company in May 2024, for facilitating this expansion into Germany. “Our ambition is to develop and operate multiple gigawatts of energy storage capacity across Europe in the coming years,” Dijkers stated. “With InfraVia’s support and our expanding project pipeline, we are rapidly working to achieve that goal—enhancing energy security and decarbonization across key European markets, including Germany.”

The German BESS market has recently experienced significant activity. One of the largest installations, a 103.5MW/238MWh battery asset in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, was recently launched by Eco Stor. Furthermore, TotalEnergies has announced a final investment decision to construct six additional BESS projects throughout Germany.

In an exclusive article for Energy-Storage.news Premium last year, Lars Rupert, Giga Storage’s chief commercial officer, revealed the organization is aiming for 5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. The importance of Germany’s BESS market was highlighted at the inaugural Energy Storage Summit Germany 2025, held in conjunction with The Battery Show Europe 2025 in Stuttgart. Key discussions focused on regulatory challenges associated with BESS deployment in Germany, the Capacity Market (CM), and structures for tolling and offtakers within the country’s energy storage ecosystem.
