Massive Energy Storage Facility in Chengdu Can Power 5,000 Homes for a Day
On May 20, 2025, the Chengdu Xinjing Dengshuang Energy Storage Station underwent its final inspection before becoming operational at the end of the month. This facility, designed to store 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, is comparable to a giant “power bank” capable of supplying energy to 5,000 households that each consume an average of 40 kilowatt-hours per day.
In addition to the Dengshuang station, Chengdu is also developing four other energy storage facilities in Pengzhou, Longquanyi, Chongzhou, and Shuangliu, each with similar capacities.
A representative from the Chengdu Municipal Economic and Information Bureau noted that new energy storage technologies help alleviate the pressure on the power grid during peak usage times. They also stimulate the development of the upstream and downstream industrial chains, enhance power supply reliability, and contribute to Chengdu’s green and low-carbon energy system.
Fast Charging Capability
What does a “power bank” that can store 200,000 kilowatt-hours of energy look like? Upon visiting the Chengdu Xinjing Dengshuang Energy Storage Station, one can see 40 containers that resemble standard shipping containers but are equipped with cooling systems. Inside each container, multiple groups of lithium iron phosphate storage batteries are neatly arranged.
During the final inspection, grid workers examined the equipment within the containers. Each container functions as a highly integrated energy storage unit, and collectively, they make up the Dengshuang Energy Storage Station. During off-peak hours, the power grid charges the station, and during peak hours, the station discharges electricity back into the grid.
The energy storage station is known for its quick response time, high energy density, and precise control, enabling it to balance electricity production and consumption. It can also provide rapid support during grid failures, making it a vital resource for the new power system.
According to Yan Guandi, deputy director of the marketing department at the State Grid Chengdu Xinjing Power Company, construction of the Dengshuang Energy Storage Station began in February 2025 and is now in its final acceptance phase. The facility can store 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which could theoretically supply 5,000 households for a day, based on an average daily consumption of 40 kilowatt-hours per household.
How long does it take to fully charge a “power bank” of this capacity? Yan explained that they typically charge it during off-peak night hours with a power output of 100,000 kilowatts, allowing it to be fully charged in just two hours. During usage, the facility discharges electricity to the grid based on instructions from the dispatch center.
Four More Facilities Under Construction
New energy storage systems are crucial technologies for building a modern power system in China and play a key role in promoting green economic transformation. In 2024, “developing new energy storage” was included in the government work report for the first time. Currently, due to falling raw material costs and expanding industrial scales, lithium battery prices are decreasing. Considering system efficiency and operational costs, the lifecycle cost of lithium battery storage has entered a range suitable for large-scale applications.
In March 2024, the Sichuan Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Sichuan Provincial Energy Bureau designated 19 projects as the first batch of pilot demonstration projects for new energy storage. Among these, five energy storage stations in Chengdu, including those in Pengzhou, Longquanyi, Chongzhou, Xinjing Dengshuang, and Shuangliu, can each store 200,000 kilowatt-hours. The Dengshuang station is set to commence operations soon, while the other four are currently under construction, with the Pengzhou Yongdingqiao Energy Storage Station expected to operate shortly.
According to the State Grid Chengdu Power Company, new energy storage has promising applications in Chengdu’s modern power system. This year, Chengdu aims to achieve a new energy storage capacity of 1 million kilowatts, with plans to exceed 2 million kilowatts by 2027. By 2030, Chengdu aims to establish a basic form of a modern power system capable of responding to more than 5% of peak load demands.
A representative from the Chengdu Municipal Economic and Information Bureau stated that new energy storage not only helps mitigate the power grid’s load during peak periods but also stimulates the development of the entire industrial ecosystem, enhancing power supply reliability and aiding Chengdu in building a green and low-carbon energy system.
