Geely Applies for Patent on Battery Thermal Runaway Management Method and Vehicle

On May 23, 2025, financial news reported that the National Intellectual Property Administration of China revealed that Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. and Geely Automobile Research Institute (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. have submitted a patent application titled “A Method for Managing Battery Thermal Runaway and Vehicle”, with publication number CN120024211A and an application date of November 2023.

The patent summary indicates that this invention presents a method for managing battery thermal runaway events in electric vehicles. The method applies to vehicles equipped with a main battery pack and a backup battery pack. It includes the following steps: monitoring for thermal runaway events in the battery pack; when a thermal runaway event is detected in the main battery pack, controlling or waiting for the vehicle’s speed to drop to zero; detaching the main battery pack from the vehicle; and then powering the vehicle with the backup battery pack.

This innovative approach ensures safety by first reducing the vehicle’s speed to zero during a thermal runaway event in the main battery pack, thereby allowing for a safe disconnection of the main battery pack. The vehicle can then continue to operate using the backup battery pack, effectively managing the thermal runaway situation.

According to data from Tianyancha, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. was established in 2003 and is headquartered in Hangzhou.
