GCL-Poly Energy Technology’s Zhongshan Energy Storage Project Recognized as a Leading Innovation and Application Case by the China Electricity Council

Shanghai, January 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — On January 15, the China Electricity Council announced the selection results for the “2025 Annual Innovation and Application Cases in the Electrochemical Energy Storage Industry.” The Zhongshan GCL-Poly 100 MW/200 MWh grid-side energy storage project, developed by GCL-Poly Energy Technology, was recognized for its outstanding achievements in “innovative applications of independent energy storage and gas turbine combined heat and power operation design and management.” Only 19 electrochemical energy storage projects nationwide made the list, establishing a new benchmark for industry technology and management.

As GCL-Poly’s first grid-side energy storage project in South China, the Zhongshan Energy Storage Station was fully completed and put into operation on October 7, 2025. It brings new vitality to the construction of a new power system based on renewable energy in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

During the planning and design phase, the project broke through the traditional single-function positioning of energy storage stations, aiming to create a combined operation model of independent energy storage and gas turbine. Utilizing land designated for the State Grid Zhongshan Gas Power Co., Ltd., the project employs a non-walking liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate energy storage technology scheme, featuring 40 prefabricated battery cabins, 20 PCS (Power Conversion System) integrated boost cabins, and one 120 MVA main transformer unit. After becoming operational, the project not only enhanced the black start capability of the regional grid, ensuring the safe and stable operation of the Southern Power Grid but also actively explored diversified profit models through grid frequency regulation auxiliary services and electricity spot market trading, achieving efficient management and high-value creation of energy storage assets.

As of January 14 of this year, the Zhongshan GCL-Poly Energy Storage project has provided over 1.59 million megawatt-hours of frequency modulation, demonstrating solid economic benefits. This achievement supports the sustainable development of the energy storage industry through innovative models and applications and serves as a model for accelerating the construction of new power systems.

The expert review panel of the China Electricity Council noted, “The innovative practices of this project provide a new paradigm for the development of grid-side energy storage. Its systematic thinking in planning and design, along with diversified innovations in operational management, effectively addresses industry bottlenecks such as low energy storage utilization rates and single business models, making it highly valuable for industry promotion.”

Energy storage is a key support business for GCL-Poly’s “dual-wheel drive” strategy. The company focuses on parallel tracks of grid-side and user-side solutions, centering on “all-scenario intelligent energy solutions.” Leveraging its advantages across the entire industry chain and AI technology empowerment, GCL-Poly is building a complete ecosystem of energy storage products, systems, and platforms, becoming an essential force in stabilizing regional grids and supporting peak power regulation.

To date, the company has implemented over 15 grid-side energy storage projects across various provinces, including Jiangsu, Guangdong, Chongqing, and Zhejiang, with a total operational capacity exceeding 1 million kilowatts. Notably, in major electricity-consuming provinces like Jiangsu, these projects play a crucial role during peak summer periods. The Wuxi Blue Sky Gas Turbine project successfully completed the first set of energy storage black start services for Jiangsu’s power grid, validating the feasibility and commercialization paths of grid-structured energy storage.

On the user side, GCL-Poly is not only extensively applying lithium battery technology but is also actively expanding into diverse technology routes such as sodium-ion batteries and all-vanadium flow batteries. These innovations are tailored to create efficient energy storage systems for industrial enterprises and parks, serving as “profit multipliers” for clients striving for cost reduction and low-carbon transformation.
