GAC Launches China’s Largest V2G Microgrid and 20,000 Charging Stations Network

GAC

On September 26, the largest V2G (Vehicle to Grid) microgrid in the country was inaugurated at the GAC Aion Park, coinciding with the launch of GAC’s 20,000th charging pile. This project represents the largest V2G demonstration initiative in China and is the first centralized V2G system integration project to achieve 10kV medium voltage grid connection.

Since the launch of GAC’s first model equipped with V2G functionality in 2023, the company has introduced both integrated and split-type 20kW V2G charging piles. Utilizing its self-developed smart management cloud platform, GAC has completed the first national validation of V2G technology through an in-depth integration of new energy vehicles with the power grid, as well as conducted real-life tests for secondary frequency modulation in conjunction with a virtual power plant.

In April 2024, the 124-pile V2G microgrid energy station at GAC Aion Park was selected as part of the first batch of vehicle-grid interaction initiatives in the country. To date, GAC has established a comprehensive framework for vehicle-grid interaction, covering aspects such as digital platforms, technological research and development, equipment manufacturing, and user operations.

As the scale of the industry continues to grow, GAC states that electric vehicles equipped with V2G capabilities can earn price differential income by participating in the power grid’s charging and discharging, potentially providing vehicle owners with economic returns of up to tens of thousands of yuan. Since its launch, GAC’s V2G demonstration center has offered a discharge revenue of 3 yuan per kilowatt-hour during the activity period.

GAC’s high-end brand, Aion, has achieved a V2G discharge protocol that complies with national grid standards, making it one of the first brands in the country to truly realize bidirectional interaction between vehicles and the power grid. Previously, Aion introduced a lifetime free charging benefit for its customers.
