Fraunhofer ICT Begins Trial Operation of Europe’s Largest Vanadium Redox Flow Battery
On June 27, 2025, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) announced the commissioning of Europe’s largest vanadium redox flow battery as part of the RedoxWind project. This impressive battery boasts a power output of two megawatts and a capacity of 20 megawatt-hours. It is situated at the Fraunhofer ICT facility in Pfinztal and is directly linked to the DC output of a 2-megawatt wind turbine.
According to Fraunhofer ICT, a recent test showcased how renewable energy sources can be integrated into the power grid effectively and predictably, regardless of varying weather conditions. This innovative combination of a wind turbine and a battery has the potential to provide an independent power supply for remote locations, businesses, or communities.
The modular vanadium redox flow battery was designed and constructed entirely using German components and expertise. It serves as a research and development platform, facilitating the testing and advancement of new storage technologies and components in collaboration with both German and international industry partners.
