Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan is nearing completion and is poised to begin production of U.S.-made lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in 2026. The construction of the plant’s infrastructure is now finished, and significant progress has been made on the mechanical, electrical, and piping systems. This marks a pivotal moment as Ford aims to be the first U.S. automaker to produce LFP battery cells domestically.
Lisa Drake, Vice President of Technology Platform Programs and EV Systems, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “We remain on track to start production of these batteries next year.” The facility signifies a major shift in battery manufacturing, with Ford producing LFP cells and packs independently, leveraging American talent and technology without relying on foreign partnerships.
The nearly one-mile-long plant is already generating C-sample LFP cells at a supplier location off-site. These advanced prototypes are set to undergo design-confirmation testing for Ford’s next-generation electric vehicle program. Once the necessary equipment is in place, portions of the facility will be converted into clean-room environments to meet the stringent quality standards required for high-performance EV battery production.
The $3 billion investment in BlueOval Battery Park Michigan underscores Ford’s commitment to vertical integration, supply chain management, and energy independence. The plant is expected to create around 1,700 jobs for American workers, contributing to Michigan’s economy and advancing the U.S. position in the global energy landscape. LFP technology is recognized for its safety, longevity, and cost-effectiveness, making it a cornerstone of Ford’s strategy to produce more affordable electric vehicles.
By focusing on localized, large-scale LFP production, Ford aims to enhance vehicle performance, reduce charging times, and decrease costs for consumers. “This facility represents the return of advanced battery innovation to American soil,” Drake remarked. “It’s not just a factory — it’s the foundation for the future of electric mobility in the U.S.”
Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park Michigan is set to initiate full-scale production in 2026, positioning the company as a leader in domestic EV battery manufacturing.
