The first batch of 15 companies that passed the assessment for the mandatory national standard GB 44240—2024 for lithium batteries used in energy storage has been announced. On April 12, 2025, the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance in collaboration with the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI) released the list of companies and their products that met the requirements of the standard. This initiative comes as the global energy transition accelerates, presenting unprecedented opportunities for the energy storage industry while also posing significant challenges due to frequent safety incidents in energy storage systems.
To ensure the safe, healthy, and sustainable development of the energy storage industry, the National Standardization Management Committee issued a mandatory national standard revision plan on December 28, 2021. This led to the formulation of the country's first mandatory safety standard for lithium batteries used in energy storage systems, titled "Safety Requirements for Lithium Ion Batteries and Battery Packs Used in Energy Storage Systems" (GB 44240—2024). This standard, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and drafted by CESI, was formally published on July 24, 2024, and will come into effect on August 1, 2025.
To assist relevant companies in understanding the specific requirements of the standard in advance, the CESI's Sai Xi Laboratory, which operates under key laboratories for green battery evaluation and analysis, has initiated testing based on the mandatory standard GB 44240—2024.
