The first batch of 15 companies that have passed the evaluation for the mandatory national standard GB 44240—2024 for lithium batteries used in energy storage has been officially announced. This information was released on April 12, 2025, by the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance in collaboration with the China Electronics Standardization Institute.
As the global energy transition accelerates, the energy storage industry is experiencing unprecedented development opportunities. However, frequent safety incidents in energy storage stations pose significant challenges to the industry. To ensure the safe, healthy, and sustainable development of the energy storage sector, the National Standardization Management Committee issued a mandatory national standard revision plan on December 28, 2021. This plan resulted in the formulation of the first mandatory national standard for lithium batteries used in energy storage systems, titled “Safety Requirements for Lithium-ion Batteries and Battery Packs for Energy Storage Systems” (GB 44240—2024). This standard, overseen by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and drafted by the China Electronics Standardization Institute, will be officially published on July 24, 2024, and will come into effect on August 1, 2025.
To assist relevant companies in understanding the specific requirements of this standard in advance and to help their products comply with these mandatory standards, the China Electronics Standardization Institute's SAI Laboratory, which is part of the “Green Battery Evaluation Analysis Key Laboratory” and the “National Green Battery Quality Inspection and Testing Center,” has begun testing in accordance with GB 44240—2024.
